Heat Shield Electrical Short?

Installed a DEI heat shield on the starter motor. After install, cranked it over and wouldn't fire. Strong crank but no fire. Second crank, fired up but stumbled a bit. Waited to get to temp, put it in drive and it completely died on me before even making it out of the driveway. Could the heat shield cause a short in the electrical somewhere that could cause this? Checked fuel and all is good there. No issues whatsoever before install.

Remove it and attempt to start it.
 
What is a "DEI?" If it shorted, there should have been massive smoke, hot plastic smell, and a dead battery. I'm thinkin you bumped / yanked some part of the harness, etc, and knocked a connection loose

Versa Shield™ Starter Shield

Checking all connections to make sure I didn't knock something loose. My hunch is no but stranger things have happened.
 
DEI, Design Engineering, they make fiberglass heat shield wraps. I have them on my starter, fuel line and brake lines where needed.
 
would think crank sense to ballast maybe
thought trump got rid of dei.......sorry
 

A heat shield can definitely cause an electrical short if it's touching the positive stud on the starter as well as the headers but I don't think that's your issue here.

I think you're having the issue that I've struggled with for years. Which is, you change one thing and something completely unrelated breaks at the exact same time and has your head spinning.

Grab a spare spark plug and check to see if you have a strong spark. Pull the throttle and look down the carb to ensure you have a strong shot of fuel. If both are good, get the engine idling at the proper RPM and check your vacuum. I have a feeling you may have a vacuum leak.
