I pulled my 73 340 (external ballance) from my duster on Saturday, with the intention of replacing it with the 408 (internal balance) that I built. I am not sure about the torque converter I have currently, as it came installed in the car when I purchased it. The tranny is a 727. I assume it was made custom for an externally balanced 340, which also assumes that the 340's that year used weights on the torque converter as well as the special damper, but who knows?

Below is a pic of the torque converter, with the numbers "k1422k" on top and "y7477" on the bottom. No other info is provided, no name brand, no nuthin'! Any ideas? I hate to buy a new convertor ($500) if I dont need to.

Thanks!

Was able to confirm with TCI that it is their converter, and it is neutrally balanced!

Thanks!

I always thought torque converters were matched to the transmission.

The torque converter is matched to the transmission but any external balancing is done for the benefit of the engine.

Jimmyray the weights you took the pics of are common balancing weights found on allot of converters. If the converter is for an externally balanced engine it will have a weight welded to the front of the converter between the flexplate bolt tabs. If no weights are welded to the front it's neutrally balanced.
