I am looking at purchasing a 1969 Plymouth GTX and I am having trouble decoding the fender tag. There is a sideways G on the right side of the tag and the VIN is split between the bottom left corner and the top right. The VIN on this car is: RS23L9A458023. Any help decoding this tag would be greatly appreciated.

OK, heres what I can tell you about this fender tag. The bottom row...RS23= R=Belvedere/Satellite...S= Special...23=2 dr. hardtop...E86= 440/1 4bbl (375hp)...D21= 4 spd trans...012667= Vehicle order number. Second line... F8=Ivy Green Metallic paint...F8= Roof color (same)...P6F= P=Premium...6= Vinyl Buckets...F= White and Green (2nd color is carpet, insturment panel, steering wheel and headliner)...F8= Upper door jamb color. 3rd row...not sure about the 68. 4th row 26= 26"radiator. 5th row...915=engine code 440/1 4bbl carb (375hpw/ 915 heads)... 596= axle code (3.54 SGw/ 9 3/4" Dana)...605= trans code ( A833 4 spd 440/426 engine) 6th row...production order numbers except the last sequence which is your last half of the VIN...9= 1969... A= Lynch Rd. plant... 458023= buils sequence.

This being a Lynch Rd. built car, it has a unique and very difficult to decipher fender tag which will show almost no options the car came with. These will have to be gotten from the build sheet. What you have here is a 1969 GTX, green outside with white buckets and green interior, 440 with a "hemi" 4 spd trans and Dana 3.54 Suregrip. Not a bad car. Hope this helps, Geof

I don't think the 915 code means it has 915 casting heads. I believe they were only used in 1967.

No 915 heads in 69... they were all 906 heads at that time.

the "68" is a delete code for the rocker stripe.

I know, I don't like those tags either. What the heck where they thinking when they decided not to use the same codes as the other plants!

I had to read through the book on how to read that damn tag!!! I think I got most of it right though...now if I could just do that with the 68 and earlier tags!!!UGGGHHH!!! Geof

I have most of the codes for the '66-8 models. Let me know if you need help on one.

Where can I find a list of these codes and the codes on line 3 of a lynch road fender tag? Are they in a book I can buy?

And do you have any of the Galen Govier books?

Ha!

There are no 'experts'.

We all have way too much to learn yet. ;-)

Lynch Road tags are off by themselves, each plant manager had leeway to code certain things the way they wanted too.

In this VIN range, some errors were made, the VIN is a typo & it is not the only one. The first 4 in the last six should have been a 1 & the SPD is a typo also.

Other examples are known.

Possibly a new employee at the tag machine or? We may never know for sure.
