Duster 340 has 3:91, 8 3/4" rear end ... Did a few burnouts in the driveway a little while ago ...

First one was a nice 75-100' one, with both tires smoking like hell .... Five minutes later did another one and only the right tire smoked, and the rear end was making a God awful noise .. kind of a scraping noise ... Did 2 more burnouts after that and same thing, right tire spinning only ...

I don't know much on how sure grips are supposed to work, but why will it burn both tires sometimes and not all the time ?? Also, anyone have thoughts on what that noise is ??? Looks like the rear end is coming out this Winter along with the engine and transmission ...

Appreciate any thoughts,

Kenny

Sounds like you fried it. Do you have any sure grip additive, friction modifer in it? I have the newer 69-up cone style posi in a 77 Fury 440, sometimes it will spin both tires and other times it won't. They do that when they start to go. Just don't do any burnouts around corners, you will finish it off!

No, not that I know of .. This is a car that has sat in my garage for the better part of the last 25 years ... I decided this year to get it running and use it, probably more for the strip than street ... So whatever fluid that's in the rear end has been there for a long time ... It's always whined a little when letting off the motor on the road, but not too bad......

What fried, ya think ? Clutches in the sure grip ?? The one wheel still spins like hell, but the noise is a brand new noise, and pretty loud ... I guess better to find out now while I'm planning to go through most of the car this Winter.....

Yikes, don't tell me only one side spins when it's ready to let go !?! I have an SRT8 Charger that we run through test and tune at the track, and every once in a while only one tire spins on it .. I think that car with the stupid open rear end half shafts is supposed to do that though??

I would drain the oil and see what it looks like. Maybe try a gear oil change and put in some posi additive. It is possible that you have a bad wheel bearing? That could be making a nasty noise while the axle is spinning hard. If you plan on rebuilding it this winter, you will eliminate any problems racing next summer!

You probably have a clutch type posi unit in your car. The clutches are replaceable. You can buy a kit with new clutchs in it at Randys Ring and Pinion or maybe even still at your local dodge dealer. A cone type usually is quiet when they get weak and start to slip. A clutch type makes all kinds of racket when they get old and weak. Hey that sounds like my wife (; (old and noisey)

Definitely possible, because she sat for so long and it could be all corroded, but I was pulling some mean hole shots when the noise developed, so I'm pretty sure it's something in the rear ...

If I'm gonna pull it all apart, I'm wondering now if 3:91's are my best option for the 1/4 mile ? I suppose it depends on tire size, etc ?? I'm not sure how to figger all that stuff out ....

Thanks Ray ...
