So Jake just picked up a 2001 Dakota with the 3.9 v6 in it for $500 that he's going to beat the dog crap out of for the next 5 years while attending the University of Maryland. Oil pressure fades as the engine gets warm. We're gonna drop the pan and put a pump in it, and want to upgrade to a high volume pump. I figure with the 150k on the clock, more volume can't hurt. The listing for a high volume pump says to check pan/crank clearance. With all the Dakotas being driven on here, I figure someone can answer this - Has any of you had clearance issues?

and get a harden tip intermediate shaft ........

forget the oil pump replace the rod/mail bearings this will limit oil onto the cylinder wall . the high volume pump will only over oil all cylinders and load the oil control rings.

You will have to bang out the oil pan for clearance for the high volume pump, but it can be done.

You can also put in a high pressure spring in the oil pump for more pressure, in either the stock or high pressure pump. They are MP parts and available at Mancini racing. You have to pull the cup plug out of the pump and replace the spring, then put in a new cup plug. Make sure that you put the cup plug in the proper way, it is backwards from what you do with the block cup plugs. Also don't drill it when you remove the plug, the chips can cause the oil pump to fail. Use a punch with a sharp blow with a hammer to punch a hole in it, then use a sheet metal screw with a washer under it to pull the cup plug out.

Here are pictures of the high pressure spring kit:

Here is a picture of the stock oil pump/distributor drive shaft/gear and the beefier MP distributor. Notice that the MP one does not "neck" down as much and is stronger:

Trucks use a rear sump oil pan so there shouldn't be any interference issues. Only center sump car pans have clearance issues
