Don't Thread On Me
Hey everyone.
Just finished up getting new Eddlebrock Performer intake on and new Holley 600, part# 0-80457S. It isn't the expensive one but I'm looking at staying stock for now. This is on my 72 Dart 318. My question is this. When I got it running and started to adjust everything and checked timing, vacuum and make sure there we're no leaks. I took it out for test drive. Drove great and when I come to a stop it continues to run good.

Everything is doing good and the trans changing like usally and kick down needs alittle adjusting. But when I got on it real quick and let off just a quick burst to see throttle response it shut off. It did this everytime I jumped on it and let off. Only does it under load won't do it while in park and running. Any ideas of what I might have missed on tuning or do you think I might need to adjust the accelerator pump alittle to give alittle more fuel to keep it running. Any thoughts on this would be great.

Thanks Michael

I'm running that carb on a LD4B and deleated the secondary plate to a metering block. When I'm driving, it has a blank spot when I wack the long pedal. Yes, I still need to tune it up some, but...what else is new. It's a good combo.

With your issue, I'd check the float level and make sure the fuel dribbles out of the site plug. Mr.Gasket (And others) sell a clear site plug to avoid fuel spills.
This is a tuning issue that needs to be tinkered with. Did you up grade any engine parts beside the intake and carb? Is the jetting stock? Did you advance the timing any?

Hey Fish
On this carb there is no way to adjust the float from the top and there are not any side plugs to pull and mess with. That is why it's not the expensive one. Total cost is $278 from the zone. You can buy meter plates and secondariy springs and do alittle adjusting. I didnt mess with timing a whole lot. May need some more timing you think?
On the jetting it is the stock with what came in carb and I havn't upgraded anything except new exhaust. Replaced all valve stem seals. But havn't done anything as farr as cam or boring nothing like that .

REALLY! I'm speechless. No way to adjust a float? Speechless, just speechless. Can you post up a picture?

Maybe. Like I said, it is going to be a tinkering thing.
What is the idle speed? In and out of gear.
I'm wondering if the throttle plates aren't closing up to much and choking it. A tad more timing may help this exact senerio.

Anybody else?

I don't have a pic but here is the site at Holley that has all the info on it and they do have a pic and you can see on top that there is no adjusting nut or site glass or plug.

Seems to be a good carb have seen a few people running them and not having problems. Mostly on stock app. The idle rpm is about 900 to 950 and when in gear umm drops to about 875 kind of hard to tell with son in car and me adjusting car and him telling me is what i was going by. When i drove it I really didnt pay to much attention to it was just making sure that car was driving smooth and was changing through gears and kick down was doing its thing right

WOW! That is the carb I have minus the float adjustment screws up top. Hummmmmmm.

Ok went out today and hooked up vacuum guage to the power brake/pcv hook up on carb. Screwed out cub idle screw to where it was not touching bracket. Then run mixture screws in to where they bottomed out and then backed them off one and half turns.( NOTE ;) Car was off during all this prep work) LOL.
Next I started car and it idled at 14 to 15lbs vacuum. I pulled the distrubtor a tad counter clockwise to advance timing little to get it to run smooth. I then started to run mixing screws out 1/4 turn each till it showed a better vacuum. RPMs picked up then vacuum picked up to 19-20 and holding strong. I then run the curb idle screw down til it touched bracket and picked up about 50 rpm's. Car was running about 1025 rpm this is after warm up has been done. I moved the timing back to 950 and vacuum stayed where it was. I throttle up with quick burst and watched the vacuum drop to about 5 then right back up to normal 19-20. I put emegency brake on pulled in drive and mash on throttle slow up to about 2200 rpm and let off quick nothing happen. But if I mash on it hard then let off it still cuts right off like you turned the switch off. Just wonder if I need to change the secondaries springs. To where they will open up sooner. I have no clue to as what is causing this. Never had one this before.

Try this;

Disconnect the vacuum advance hose from the carb and plug the nipple on the carb.

Connect timing light to the #1 plug wire.

Loosen the distributor clamp and start up and fully warm up the engine.

Set idle speed (Via the screw) to 2600 RPM and set the distributor to 32*'s BTDC,.

Reduce idle to where it should be.

Connect vacuum advance hose and run the idle engine to 2600 RPM, total advance with vacuum hose attached should not be more than 52*'s. Retard if need be.

This is the best general setting for performance and a starting point.

IF the engine is cranky to start up, you have to much intail and it will need to be retarded some more (Timing.) for easy starts.

Retune carb.
