I made this from a 5/16" bolt cut to length and ground to a point. Threaded into the block and locked it into place and bent it up just a small amount to clear the timing wheel.

Work GREAT. NO movement at all like you get from a coat hanger wire...

Problem is you cannot move it. And making a 1/2 degree correction at the wheel is difficult.
 
I do the same kind of thing but I use an adjustable pointer that screws into the end of the cylinder head.

I would rather move the wheel and have a steady pointer... Just personal preference.. And putting a different approach out there...

Doesn't matter to me, but I don't have a fancy hub. I just clamp the wheel between some washers and the crank bolt. This means, once it is there, you don't want to mess with it.
