The two sheet metal screws holding the side view mirror on a '65 Formula S and '65 Signet convertible are not doing the job. Mirrors always seem loose. What is your better idea? Thank you.

Install 8 or 10-32 nutserts into the door and use stainless screws to hold it in place. If the door panel is off you could use an 8 or 10-32 screw with a nut on the inside. If you ever have to take it a part again you'll need to remove the door panel obviously.

If the mounting holes arent violently stripped, they might be warped upward from tightening. A pointy body hammer or small ball peen can flatten the holes out and smallerize them a bit. Helps if you can get a dolly or something inside the door as a backer for the massaging.

The mirror on my 64 kept loosening up. I bought the correct gasket from DMT and installed it. That seems to have fixed the loosening problem.

But if it persisted I would make a nut plate out of bar stock, say 1/8" x 3/4" long enough to be longer than the screw centerline dimension. Tap the nut plate in 2 places. Install it from inside the door and use 2 oval head machine screws with loc-tite through the mirror and door skin into the tapped holes . I'm guessing they woild be 10-24 UNC but you'll have to verify the size. 10-32 UNF optional.

What side view mirrors?

I don't have any..............

I'm sure Someone will be offended but, I used these, used smallest I could find. Had to drill holes a little larger. been holding fine for about 10 yrs.

Do they make those in stainless, with phillips head and countersunk? None I've seen.
