How to determine year of 8.75 center section...??

...without disassembly? I am told that carrier bearings come in two sizes: 1.800" for pre 1969 and 2.000" for post 1969. I want to have all parts on hand for a carrier change (to spool) before I take it out and apart if possible.

Whoops...dumbass here! I thought all of the three versions were made all years.

If you are going to a spool, it does not matter what bearing are on the carrier that is installed presently. The 2 different bearing sizes you mentioned go some thing like this: all open diff and cone type suregrip units take one bearing, the clutch type suregrip takes the other, they interchange (bearing..carrier assemblies) thru all the housings ie 741, 742, 489......when you order the spool, order the bearings that match IT, problem solved.
