I'm trying to pull the sure grip out of the 8 1/4 housing. I went to undo the 5/16th bolt and it came out but the other end of it stayed inside holding the big pin in where I can't get the axles out. Has anyone ran into this problem before and how did you get yhe rest of the bolt out so you could remove the pin?

I would probably try the magnet first before ordering the kit. The one's on the end of a pocket screwdriver work well. But, there's a 50/50 chance it's wedged in place because the cross pin was trying to move around and caused it to shear.

If it won't come out with a magnet, you can knock it through. Get a steel drift rod and a large ball peen and hammer it. The stuck piece will sheer off. Once it is out, you can remove everything and clean it up good. Did quite a few this way in my dearlership days. I had a used cross pin in my tool box just for doing it.

Ok thanks. Wasn't sure if it would go all the way through to the other side.

It will, only drawback is there's always the possibility of the "WRONG" thing breaking. I've had part of the carrier break away when I did one like that. Most of the time that trick works, especially when there's "not much" of the pin left holding the cross shaft in, like yours sounds like.

If your good with a stick welder you can put a rod against the broken piece with the stinger, then have someone else turn the welder on and off real quick. The rod will weld itself to the pin and you can pull it out. When I was mud dragging I would shear axle off right outside the carrier. About a 3” stub. I would weld however many rods together and use this process to remove it.

Not just an 8-1/4 problem or even a "Mopar" problem. I've actually had more problem with that happening on Chevys (well any GM) than anything, at work. And that "5/16 bolt" (really wasn't, besides the wrench size) is actually a "one bolt fits most" as in all of the Big 3 for lots of years) even though the application chart may not tell you so.

Did all of the threaded portion of the bolt come out? I've not had to use one of these kits yet, but this may be your best option.

Have you ever had a dealing with them? I ordered this last Sunday. Says 1-2 days shipping. Still hasn't arrived and all their site says is order received. I tried calling them Thursday and Friday with no answer and no return email or phone call. They have taking the money out my account. Monday I'm going to my bank to dispute the charge and get my money back for frogulant charge.

Sometimes I have been able to take a pick when there is like a 1/4-1/2 thread left in the carrier and catch an edge of the remaining stub, and twirl it out as many times when a bolt breaks there's an edge left that a pick can catch and with no head left on the stub (it already unscrewed right) there is no pressure/torque left on the stub...

No, unfortunately I haven’t dealt with them. I did email them the link to this thread, though. This may be a good time to file a BBB complaint,
