I know this is political, but well worth this forum.

I don't see it as quite a politcal one, but one to help the hobby and those who are already on a fixed income. For some their cars might be the only thing that brings them happiness in a world that they can't afford too much else. Gotta help them keep what joy they can afford when they can afford it........if I lived there I'd sign it.

I agree.

Time to move to Sc Spaz..........and bring my Barracuda with you :D.

Seriously, this crap will probably get worse before it gets better. Certain politicians feel emboldened right now.........nevermind, most of you know where i was going.

I've seen some pretty nutty ways to raise tax revenue, but an annual tax on old cars?

CT taxes you on your cars every year. The taxes on my 2008 Impreza is about $250. If you register your car as an antique you get a break on the taxes (needs to be 25 years or older) But its more expensive to register it and you have to register it ever 2 years instead of every 4.

I also got a $500 tax bill for my business last year just for being a business on top of the other taxes I have to pay.

I'm speechless. I thought we Canadians had the market cornered on evil ways to raise tax money. I had no idea this was so widespread. Please don't tell our politicians!

Spaz,
Thanks for bringing this to our attention. I signed and will be passing it along. A couple things I found out about this:
1. Here is the link to the bill: [ame]http://www.legis.ga.gov/Legislation/20132014/128450.pdf[/ame]
The paragraph starting on line 36 details how this will work. The local tax commissioner will consult something like NADA blue book to establish the value of the car and then we get taxed accordingly. For my Duster it lists at $17,600, for our Pontiac, somewhere between $23,100-$48,300!
2. The representative that introduced this is Tom Rice of Norcross. If you know your rep, or anyone in his district - they ought to be contacted. I will be contacting mine asap...

A little background for folks outside Georgia. Our tag fees are based upon the value of the vehicle and we are assessed this ad valorem tax every year. New car - big tax, old car= little tax. Presently I think the Duster ran me a $20 tag fee and a $5 tax last year. Given a value of $17,600 I expect it would be more like $20 tag fee and maybe a $200 ad valorem tax. EVERY YEAR! If they assessed the Firebird at the upper end I would have to sell it or pull it off the road, I wouldn't be able to afford the tag & tax every year.

Thanks again for your post.

I take you guys have a lot of buy-here pay-here dealerships in the state?

The money grab is gonna hit them pretty hard, too. Even if they have to "repossess" they're still gonna owe all the taxes on the original purchase price (if I'm reading this right) even if they didn't see the money.

If you guys know any of these dealers who "self-finance" you might want to make them aware of the situation, too, and get them on board with calling their local reps.

(iv) The department shall impose an annual registration fee of $100.00 on such
316 dealers that directly finance the sale of used motor vehicles. In such case, the
317 department shall retain the title of such motor vehicle until such state and local ad
318 valorem tax fees are paid in full. In the event that the purchaser defaults under the
319 financing agreement and the dealer retakes possession of the motor vehicle, the dealer
320 shall pay the remaining amount of the state and local title ad valorem tax fees
321 within 30 days of retaking possession of the motor vehicle and, upon the submission13 LC 28 6462
322 of the appropriate application, documentation, and all applicable fees, the department
323 shall issue the title for the motor vehicle to the dealer.

They've been talking about raising taxes on vintage cars here in Connecticut also. Once this takes root it could be really bad for all of us.

imho, let the more commie-influenced states fulfill their Commie agendas... Once we have a good polar opposite, and the Free states' people own firearms, have low crime, nice cars, big homes, six boats, fat bellies, thick juicy steaks; and the Commie states have no enterprise, no infrastructure, broad internet censorship and monitoring, a big huge wall, and a terrible quality of life; maybe people might start realizing that Socialism is unsustainable and unfavorable.
