Hi gang,

I have torn down my 340 and have just five more bolts to remove in the block before it goes out for hot tanking and magnafluxing and hopefully machining.
The bolts I speak of have a square indent. What is the name of the tool and where can I get one? It looks like an Allen tool fitting but square. There are three of them on the back of the block, one in the oil filter plate and one inside on the back of the passenger side cylinders. I have seen a lot of tools in my time but never have I been stumped like this before. I ask the pros for help. Thanks,

Doug(SoCal)

Sometimes those plugs are 3/8" squares, You can use a short extension on your rachet and no socket. Just put the end of the extension in the plug. You will probably have to heat up the plug.

Yes I tried that. Its seems the 3/8" extention is just a bit big. I may have to sacrifice one of my Craftsman extensions until after the rebuilt. Then exchange it under warranty. 'What grinding marks? I don't see grinding marks"

Those are the oil gallery plugs. And the bigger one on the back of the block gives access to the lifter oil gallery plug on the driver's side. Those plugs are 5/16" square. What most people do is get a bolt and grind it down square on the end. Then put it in the plug and use a wrench to back them out. I am not aware of a tool that fits those plugs.

You can go to the hardware store and buy a short piece of bar stock slip it in and use a wrench on it or cut a piece off and weld it up as a t handle and keep it as a plug tool

Now thats what I am looking for. Thank you. Why is there a plug to access the oil gallery plug? And why is there an oil gallery plug? And...do I have to replace them during the rebuild? Should I replace all the oil gallery plugs even if they were not there when I got the engine? I am sorry for the questions. Just want to make sure that I am doing things right. Again..thank you.

Mac calls them "drain plug sockets". They come in many different sizes and
are 1/2" drive. They run about $20/each. I usually put an extension on the drive end and tap it with a plastic or soft faced hammer. These oil galley plugs are tapered pipe thread and by tapping on them first. It seems to upset the threads and they come loose easier. toolmanmike
