I just bought a trailer and it has this winch on it: 9000 lb. Off-Road Vehicle Electric Winch with Automatic Load-Holding Brake

The box on the top of the winch holds the circuit breaker and wiring. Mine is gone. Winch works, PO says it was borrowed and came back that way.

I'm thinking of getting some kind of water tight storage container and putting the wiring, etc. inside it. It doesn't have to go on top of the winch; I can bolt it down nearby.

The size should be about 6" W x 6" H x 10" long. Size not critical.

Any ideas on what to use, great FABO minds?

EDIT: I priced a new box, they sell it with the wiring and breaker for $129.99!

Think marine/sporting storage box. Lots of stuff available out there where you could drill and grommet the wiring in and out.

Go to your local hardware store and pick up one of those grey electrical boxes for outside
They should come with a screw on lid and a gasket

Thanks for the ideas. I'm going to try this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0000CEZ8O/?tag=fabo03-20
It's bigger than needed, but maybe I can store other stuff in it.
I need something with an easy to open lid because the only in/out button "was" on the remote, which also was destroyed except for the button itself which is hard wired to the breaker. I can just open the lid and work the switch.

I have the same problem. I plan on using a grey single, but more likely a double wide exterior switch box as diymirage suggested, and mount it out of harms way.

Yes, I agree with the ammo box idea. You can get them for cheap at tractor supply co, and harbor freight.

just be ready to be targeted by snowflakes if you mount a ammo box on your car

I knew when I seen you post here it had to be creative

hey, my first post here were very informative and offered good advice pointing him in the direction of a solution that is readily available, affordable and designed pretty much for what the OP wanted to do (keep wiring out of the elements) , if there was a need for any more posts after that one, they were bound to be "creative"

Those is California bullets ... Lead free ... Similar to the "Armor Piercing" that the turd in Vegas used to ruin so many lives ... California legislators had no idea what they brought on themselves by protecting them over sized turkey buzzards :soapbox:

Thanks for the ideas. Just wanted to update with what I did:

The small, hard to see thing in the box is what's left of the original in/out button.

OE switch survived one use did it? Sounds about right. Darn good looking work there. I have seen two momentary contact switches mounted in a palm fitting grip thing for DC hoists and winches. Lord only knows where you would find one unless it were attached to some unsuspecting mechanic's truck with a hoist mounted on it. I didn't say that, and I'm not givin it back. I promise never to do it again.

I can order the wired remote switch, but for now, I can use what's left of the original. Thanks.

A remote starter switch. One leg to the ground. Switch the other leg to the motor via a heavy duty 2 pole switch for forward an back. Heck, since the switch just operates the relay, it wouldn't even have to be that much HD.

So you used a garbage can for that little bit of wiring.
I would have bought a small plastic tool box.

Momentary toggle switch,3 terminal.
My warn uses a toggle.
I replaced plug with an extension cord male/female. This way i can add 100 footer to it and run cable to car, climb in and winch myself up.
Or buy a wireless remote kit. Best option.
