There is only one way to be certain that this engine has the forged crank and that is to drop the pan take a look at it, it's easy to tell the difference. To some degree you can't even go by the vibration dampener (the cast and forged dampener are different) because someone may have put a cast dampener on a forged crank or visa versa. At the drivers side front of the block, across from distributor, is a 1"x2" flat area of the block with an initial like H followed by 440 stamped into it. The letter "H" stands for 1972 and so on.

How can I identify which is forged and which is cast? Any particualr thing I should pay attention in order to identify them?

can't go buy stampings. peeps buy stamps and hit it up..I knew a guy who ground down the factory stamp and put his name...look pro..he was worried someone would steal the vehicle which someone did...20 years later it was recovered..well the motor..still had his name on it..FRED CASEY

DS is right about checking the crank directly.
Nowadays you cant go by the year built, many have been swapped.
I bought a 74 datecoded 440 from a truck that has a forged crank.
Right now I can buy a running cast crank 73 440 w/727, pullys included.
Guy is asking 450.00

I bought a 50K mile '70 dated 440 with trans a couple weeks ago for $500.00. Took it home, poured some Marvel mystery oil in cylinders and let it sit overnite. Dropped the pan and cleaned out the gunk. It has a forged crank everything looked good so I pre oiled it and dropped the trans pan. Changed the filter and put in new fluid. Poured some gas in the carb and it fired right up. It looked like a scene from Road Runner with all the black smoke that blew out. I'm calling it the "Acme Engine"...
