Jim Hurtubise (North Tonawanda, NY) in Norm Nelson's USAC 1966 GTX at Milwaukee.

Herk, as he was known, was severely burned in an Indy car race at Milwaukee. His car had a front mounted fuel tank and it exploded and covered him in burning fuel after colliding with another car and taking a ride over the fence.

Recovering at an Army burn center in Texas, he instructed the surgeons to fix his hands so he could hold a can of beer... he was told he would never race again. The next spring he was back in an Indy car and his hands were perfectly shaped to hold a steering wheel.

He passed in 1989.

Back when cars had personality. Back when your favorite driver drove a Plymouth or Dodge, and it looked like the car sitting outside in your driveway! Not the decaled universal BS cars of today racing.

For the Lord of God , ...the man drove Indanapolis ,multiple rides.
Cool Op Thread ,and post !

Love it!

Pops has a 60's max wedge drag car in storage, still has original paint and sponsors on it. Gaser front end and Hillborne injection.

She's one cool lady.

She's about 3'rd on the list but she will be brought back and drive again. She will NOT become a manhole cover..

It took pops 20 years to get this car. He would stop over at the owners house and ask if they would sell it every so often and one day they did.
