My daughter LOVES "Hello Kitty" just because its designated a "cat" but followed her ways as a even younger child, (today shes 9) And still likes Hello Kitty....

In a sense, when you leave yer house, you say "Hello Kitty" without EVER saying the words, upon yer return, home!!!! LOL

Lots of Japanese stuff looses or gains meaning in translation.

Some of it you can figure out, some you can't.

There is also a connection with the ceramic cat statues that are popular in Japan.
It is my understanding that they are "for good luck" (like a horse shoe).
They are usually depicted with an outstretched paw, and there is an associated phrase that roughly translates to "the beckoning cat" or "hello cat".

I was pretty heavy into Japanese animation back in the late 80's and early 90's, and it was interesting to me how the stories would often focus on and emphasize what seemed like minor details, but skip through some major portions of the story that were vital to the plot.

One in my collection is called "Riding Bean", and features very well done renderings of a 68 Shelby mustang and what appears to be a modified F40 Ferrari throughout the story. The title seems to translate to "annoying Bean" (Bean is the name of the main character), but also plays on riding as in a car. Odd in translation but makes sense once you get it.

So Ms. Christine R. Yano you probably studied for 10 semesters for your anthropolgist title. If that's the results of 5 years of studying then I'm glad I dropped out of high school at 15 & started doing cars. Holy Crap!!!!
