Good evening everyone,
I have a 1972 Dodge Dart Swinger with the 225 in it. This thing was a perfect "project car" when my husband and I bought it. We bought it very cheap and it passed smog. Since owning this car, we have rebulit the engine. Had to go 40 over on the pistons and 10 under on the crank, this car has cost us a pretty penny to get it back on the road. It passed smog and all was well. or so we thought. We had a major vacuum leak, and the exhaust manifold was cracked in between 3 and 4. I bought a new exhaust manifold, but cannot find the intake to save my life! I sent the intake to a local machine shop and they assured me that I didn't have to do anything to the exhaust manifold. Now, after trying to bolt the 2 together, it doesn't line up on one side! I'm at my wits end and I don't want to get rid of it I love this car!!!! I need to know if anyone out there knows of any tricks or where I can find an untouched intake manifold? I need to get this car on the road, Hot August Nights is coming up and my 06 silverado is killing me in gas! Please help!

So is the problem the intake or the exhaust?

one barrel carb or two?

what year is the engine?

Btw, a picture of the problem would help, if you can't figure out how to upload to the site (I think its a PITA myself and I'm a teenager lol) us photobucket and embed the photo in your post.

Also too! Welcome to the forum! We have some female members here who will definetely appreciate your company so please stick around!

It's a 1972, this car was all original mechanically. (Paint and interior was the only thing changed). It is a single and I was trying to keep it as original as possible. However; it looks as though that is not going to happen. I will upload pictures tomorrow.

Oh yes, one more thing. Once you answer to yourself the questions I asked you, go to this page here:

http://www.forabodiesonly.com/mopar/forumdisplay.php?f=15

This is the car and car parts wanted section of the site. It will be your best friend during times of need such as this.

Also read this: http://www.forabodiesonly.com/mopar/showthread.php?t=239693

This covers a new feature just added to the site, when you post in the wanted section, beside the thread title you will see a drop down box that says prefix. This allows you to put the big red wanted word beside the title and will make it stand out.

Things you will need to know to get the best help:
What year is the car? One or two barrel carburetor? Is it a california car?

Example:

WANTED - Slant six manifold

Looking for a good useable one barrel intake manifold for a 1970 non california 225 slant six. Willing to pay $50 plus shipping.

One last thing, stop by this section of the site

Alright cool, that will help us alot in the art of helping you! Don't get to bummed about your car, there are alot of knowledgeable and friendly people here always willing to help!

you tightened down the intake to exhaust bolts before you seated the assembly to the head didn't you? ive found that they never line up properly if you final assemble them and then install, you need to just get the bolts (the three from the int to exh) not even snugged, but just so its not flopping around. then install and get all the head studs nuts and washers installed and again just touching so it can move. then tighten the three bolts, then the head studs

I'm not an expert on slant 6's only small blocks. I may have an intake sitting around on one of my spare slants. What year intakes are interchangeable?

As long as it doesn't have an EGR port she can use it without having to modify it. All of them are pretty much interchangable its just the EGR port.

I believe her car doesn't have EGR.

OP how thick are the flanges on the intake for where the little triangle washers sit in to the face?

If it's too much of a hassle, you can pick up 225s on here for almost next to nothing. I know it's original and you've already spent a lot getting it to where it is ... but it's an option.

Welcome aboard! :-D

I may have one from a mid 60's or late 60's. I would have to look. Let me know if you need one (original poster).

Hey, there's my favorite powder coater.... :blob:

Here are two pictures of intakes. I would prefer to keep the red one as it is still on an engine that is stored outside. I believe that they are from the mid 60's, like 64, 65 ish. They both look identical. I will send the intake and exhaust manifolds without the throttle bracket. The exhaust manifolds are so you get all the screws and bolts with it, they have the typical hairline cracks. I ended up ordering a new exhaust manifold from a place brand new for less than $200.

PM me your address with zip code so I can get a shipping quote. I will send you the top one for just the cost of shipping. We like to help each other out here. I won't be able to pack and quote today, maybe tomorrow after I get an address.

Here are the pics:

Here's one on an engine, I believe a 66 model slant:

Let me know if this is what you are looking for.

If you need another exhaust manifold. I bought one brand new when we put my ex's slant together from a place named Silverseal 734-479-2255. They sent one in like 4 days for less than $200 with shipping (from near Detroit) and it came with alot of hardware (brackets & bolts).

For anyone needing a slant 6 exhaust manifold, try Silverseal. Good part at a reasonable price. All the used exhaust manifolds that I tried to use, ended up having the "typical cracks". The Silverseal one works great on my ex's 64 Dart.

Just got a brand new one myself. It cost me a little more than $200. But it is brand new.

Don't fret about getting parts, especially if you stay original slant since so many people change to a V-8. Same for power steering, more people change to manual steering. I picked up a 74 slant & tranny from a member here for free who just needed it out of his garage and couldn't sell it. I see them advertised for up to $400 on craigslist, but doubt they ever sell for much. Just last weekend, I bought a 64 slant auto tranny for $50 at a car show, including the cables and push-buttons. You don't see those every day, which is why I got it for backup. I just need more storage space and an understanding wife. A few years ago, ebay had rebuilt slant engines in the crate from military surplus for ~$500.

I agree with the "snug here, snug there, repeat" method above. I once put my slant intake and exhaust on an optical table to get the 2 manifolds perfectly flat while I tightened the 3 bolts. Search www.slantsix.org for an article showing exactly how to install the manifolds, including how to orient the triangle and cone washers. They are the opposite of what seems intuitive and if you get it wrong, the exhaust can crack, which may be what happened to you. The article has been linked here several times in the past.

Dagum ya'll when I replaced my exhaust manifold in my car back in 2010, I bought mine from a member here for $25 and some shipping.

I'm a titewad lol!

So hows the car coming dj?

This will help tremendously installing your intake and exhaust , It helped me when I did mine............ KrazyKuda ... You are the man sir, helping this new member is sure a fuzzy feeling moment :D... I think this is the thread will help, not sure if it has been posted here for her yet

You guys are all awesome. For some reason the slant six is not a popular engine in Reno. I sell parts to shops for a living and not one mechanic could tell me a dang thing about my car. Not to mention this is mine and my husband's first mopar.

Welcome aboard djritter, as you can see this is the best of the best sites going and many great tech and good folks here, remember to take your time and enjoy and read these threads closely, so it sounds like KrazyKuda has you fixed up with an intake ?
