yup 8 3/4 is over kill on a slant six, a rebuilt 7.25 can handle up to 200hp and you can get any gear ratio from 3.23-4.10 online same gears as the early dakota rearends.

I never knew Dakotas came with 7.25 rears, I thought 8.25 was about the smallest and most common in those.

The cut off is 1998, making the 7-1/4 Chrysler's longest produced axle design, starting at 1960. Like Big Unkie says, good lawn and garden tractor rear axle.

Yup, they are a bolt on, I had two built with 3.55 gears, lightweight less power to turn etc cheap as fuck too.

The ring & pinion are a bolt-on,....not a Dak rear axle just for Newbs,...the later FMJ version & Daks had larger bearings. The fortuitous advent of the Daks using a 7.25 R&P in the frt. diff on 4x4's made a great selection still available............
              My '87 1st-yr. dak is a 3.9L 2bbl carb 2WD 8ft.bed unit,.....came with a 7.25 rear & 2.76 open gearset.
I managed just barely over 23mpg combined driving one tankful,......but that was "extreme mileage" driving, mostly I got ~18-20mpg.

I've never known "THAT" to be cheap at all. Any I ever got always cost me way too much.

Yup, sometimes on Craigslist for free, or if your desperate junkyard drum to drum 110.00 plus tax, I usually look for 3.23 gear 7.25 but won't pay more than 150.00 for them. To get them set up for 150.00 bucks around 350.00 got a nice set up. Also upgrade them to ten inch drums as well.

Agreed, but only for slant six or other lighter duty usage. On an odd note, I seen a 4.56 gear for one on flea bay the the other day. I'd try it if I had the miniature PowrLok in mine.

So, what's the story with the timing chain (less power used)? I can't find any info supporting (or disproving) this.

I just hauled off half a dozen 7 1/4 rear ends for scrap metal, along with 4-5 tapered axle 8 3/4's. Other stuff, too. 1220 pounds total. Got $36 for the whole load.

I have a NOS set of 3.55 gears for a 7 1/4. Was thinking about putting them in my 63 Valiant in place of the 2.94's. Problem is (I found out) the NOS set only fits 60 and 61. If I remember correctly, the ring gear bolts are smaller than 62 and later. Put the gears on ebay a couple years ago and they didn't sell. I'm about ready to throw them in the trash along with all the extra 7 1/4 rears I used to have. (Sorry if I sound crabby, but I've been rather forcibly confronted with the fact that I'm getting old and have way more stuff than I'll ever get around to using. So have been trying downsize and I'm finding out that that's a bigger job than I ever imagined. 2500 pounds of scrap metal so far, not counting several junk cars or all the stuff I've sold on ebay and Craigslist or the stuff I've given away to friends. How did I ever manage to accumulate so much junk??)

I think Facebook has Valiant Lancer groups of that vintage. You might try joining and seeing if anyone wants to buy them.

My 7.25 has been taking all kinds of abuse from my 318, 4bbl, summit cam and home ported heads for 5 years now. 14 second power and no issues. They are a little tougher than most give them credit. Now a clutch car with biting tires is a different story....

I bet part of it depends on how hard a life it had endured before we get it too!!!

For certain, I believe the '60-'61 also has an odd spline count on the pinion compared to the later models, it's been discussed on FABO before. I believe member valiantwagonguy had a set for sale as well..???

I am thinking there were lots of differences betweem the 61 A body and the 62 up A, maybe this is one.
