I just received my 71 360 short block from the machine shop. The machinist recommend i try an intermediate shaft in the new bronze bushing before I start assembling. I plan on running a stock oil pump. What shaft do I need? I was thinking this would work? http://www.summitracing.com/parts/mel-is-72/overview/ I do not have a cam yet but plan on running a mild cam. Also wondering what to run for an oil pump. Car will be street only. This will be my first engine build, so any help is appreciated.

Mancuini racing has heavy duty intermediate shafts that are straight diameter all the way down to the hex. They are stronger and more durable than the stock tapered style.

Test fit it in the bushing to make sure that it is not too tight. Don't forget to lubricate it before installing it into the bushing.

Sounds like the shop drove in the bushing but didn't burnish it to the right size... That could be problematic.

Yes if they installed the bushing it would be there job to ream it to size for the shaft being used. This should be done before assembling the short block. You wouldn't want filings in your motor from this being done. . This is the difference in a machine shop that cares and one that don't. If they told you to do this it means they knew but it was overlooked.

If he didn't supply them with your intermediate shaft then how would they know what size to "burnish" the bushing to?

Anyways, grab the mopar performance one that has a hardened shaft with a pinned gear. Only a few dollars more @ Mancini.

Then check the fit before you worry. There's a good chance everything will be fine. Just don't assemble the block before you check this as others have mentioned.

The one in the picture on that link looks like a stock one, hopefully they just used the generic picture. I have some of the shafts where there is no taper and it is just the same diameter all the way to the hex. When ordering make sure that it is the one with no taper.

I've replaced the bushing myself without having to maching/burnish it afterwards. The shaft was tight, but worked fine. That's why it's good to check it afterwards to be sure it isn't too tight.

I believe that's the exact one I've always run on the smallblock. Never had an issue with it & yes it's been on a HV pump with 20w50 oil. That's where the added stress comes from versus stock.

It is my fault for not supplying the shaft, I just did not think of it till after engine was done. The machinist is the owner and operator and told me he would take care of it if there is a problem. So far has been a great gut to work with. I will get the mopar performance one. Does this look right ?

As long as you use an aftermarket bushing and not the factory Chrysler part, it will be the correct size when pressed in and require no further work.

Finally got some parts ordered and received. I now have all the parts to assemble lower end. I tried the MP shaft and it it fit fine. Thanks for the advise. Hoping to start assembly next week.
