Wondering about internal or external balanced motors. I am getting a new 440 which is a 1974 block but has a steel crank which I am guessing is internally balanced? I currently have a 76 with a cast iron crank that is externally balanced and has a huge dampner on it. What I am wondering about it the weights on the torque converter, if the new motor is internally balanced I assume I don't need those weights, if that the case, can they be taken off or will I require a new converter? Any help is appreciated.
 
Take the weights off and you're good to go! Might be the time to consider a new higher stall one since its easy to change at this point.

I was thinking the same thing about the converter, might be time for a new one.
 
The new engine, what balance system was done? A forged crank in a block that had a cast one will need to be internal, so you should just be able to whack the weight...
 

Can I use a flexplate from a cast crank on a steel crank?
 
The flex plates are totally interchangable, as long as the bolt circle of the two convertors are the same. The imbalance is corrected by either weights on the convertor itself, or the balancer in the front. The ones that are thin are generally nuetral..that is, for use with forged cranks, or internally balanced. The thickr ones and tapered ones are for cast cranks, and have the phrase "For use with cast crank (insert engine size here..340, 360,400, 440) only".
