I am getting a transmission rebuilt and have the option to install a shift kit. I have no experience with them, is it worth the money, or not?
Is a shift kit worth it?

They are fun. I installed a B&M in my Challenger back in the day and I could bark the tires into second gear as needed.

If your car is a cruise and you want it comfy with a little beating now and then i would skip it... they are fun if you are is a beater but can get annoying over time

Do it, even if just a mild rv style.

If you go with the entry level RV type, it will not be annoying. It'll just firm the shift nice.. it won't chirp in second gear but it won't shift like a marshmallow either

Two atmospheres are better than one
A clean, crisp, firm shift is better for the transmission also. Soft marshmallowy shifts are comfortable but you get those by slowly applying clutches (slipping). Ask em for a firmer shift but not neck breaker status and you’ll be happy with it.
the entry fairbanks kit or the trans-go TF2 set to "stun" and not kill is a great kit for a street machine burger cruiser.

Okay, I'm going to ask for a firm shift, and not to aggressive.
It's what I did with my car. Nice and firm but NOT obnoxious
Be careful of who does the work. This is the result of a shift kit improperly done. Shifted drive full throttle and locked up like a trans brake. Found out what happened after the trans internals were put in this challenger. The driver of the Demon 17 yrs old was killed instantly. Hit this rock.

Firming up the shifts is a good thing that will add longevity since you are eliminating a lot of the "flare" associated with the shifts. So yes, it's a good thing.

Ask about the Transgo SKTF shift kit improver kit. I had one installed in the 727 in my Challenger, by a very good builder. Under normal throttle, just a little firmer/crisper 1-2 shift, and the 2-3 shift was also improved. The Challenger had a 360 in it, and was used mostly for cruising. Your next set up if you are so inclined would be the TF-1 by Transgo.

I had a 727 rebuilt by a reputable, experienced shop and asked him to put in a "shift kit". As you said, in lieu of a kit he did some old school voodoo to make it work. I find that the 727 is actually smoother than my 904.
