On the weekend, an elderly lady was hit and killed by an out of control car. The story is starting to come out. Appearently the car was being driven by a 16 year old male that was street racing at the time. He lost control, jumped a curb, dug up lawns for a block, mowed down 2 fence's and then struck the lady as she was crossing a side street. The local media is calling it "Drag Racing" this morning. I also noticed that one radio station had changed their story and is now calling it street racing. The local cops are saying charges are pending, but being 16 years old, the kid will get off with a slap on the wrist. I know if it was me at 51, that I would be going to jail for at least 5 years for vehicular manslaughter.

same thing happened here last week. It's going to be the death of modified vehicles.

when i was young a dumb at least we would take it out to some country back road . these kids seem to be doing it in the city limits . but the country roads we used to do it on are now filled with houses you have to drive alot further now

Yep. Same thing for those crotch rockets. I love motorcycles. However, I think you should have to be at least 25 before getting a crotch rocket.

I wanted one at 19 and, thank God, I couldnt afford it. My son wanted one at 20 and now he is in a coma.

I came back to add this point.

Anyone who has a kid who street races, etc. Send me a PM and I will send you before and after pictures of my son.

He went from a strong 21 year old defending his country in Iraq to laying in a bed with tubes and hoses and being fed through a tube.

sorry to hear this. I have a friend who wrecked his bike and broke his shoulder blade in half. he was street racing and lost control. it did not bother him at all. thinks he is invinsible. he is back at it again. telling me and others of how we should ride with him around this corner at 120mph. and of how much of a rush it is. He is gonna kill himself at the rate his is going. I know his parents are very worried. only good thing right now is. it is almost winter and time to park it.

Sorry as hell, Frank, here is to hoping.

The next time I hear som DOHD tell me how "they can handle it" or "it is too far to the nearest track", I think I may do just that. Someone here has the signature "keep it neat on the street and fast at the track". Amen Brother.

I had told my son when he bought this bike that it would kill him if he wasnt careful and he said, "I've been to Iraq."

I told him that the bike would kill him quicker than Iraq because in Iraq he had others watching his back.

My son was going in excess of 80 MPH and riding a wheelie when he lost control and hit a tree. The bike was broken in THREE pieces.

To the ones who "can handle it" or think "nothing will happen" to them, please having a living will, power of attorney, long term disability, and a will in place. Your relatives will need all these things.
I have had to sign THREE "do not resuscitate" orders on my son. You want to talk about misery!!

My son would have said-and did say-that it wouldnt happen to him. Well it did and I can tell you that, if it werent for his military service and insurance, I dont know what we would have done.

I have a 2 year old grandson who may now only know his dad through pictures and stories from us.

Read that and tell them to ask themselves, is it worth it??

Please have your friend read what I just wrote. I am sorry to hear he is thick.

I will pray for him.

My prayers go out to the family and friends of the lady that was just crossing the street, Frank your son stays in my prayers and to you and your family to be strong.
These crotch rockets and young guns driving like they own the road need to
sit down and read this thread and see that they are taking other peoples lives
and stop and remember what this road was but here for.
I am the first one to follow a speeding or passing in a danger zone.
My wife will contest of this, I make the time to make a fast call and keep the driver that past me and my young sons approaching a hill in sight.
I have went to court two times and turned in one young gun to his parents
about his sons driving a honda like a kid with a mission and my son said he was driving a old ford truck to school know. This happened about ten years ago and the word has hit the streets here that Mr memike will have your car taken away if your parents and law finds out what they are doing.
I may not have a badge but I pay taxes and have allot of family and friends on the streets here.
I enjoy my time in my car and I see more and more young girls doing the same thing, Yep she was my last victim back in early spring I don't know
what came of it but Jack Mecan or sheriff said they get a letter and get put on a watch list.

oh , One more thing, Don't through trash out in front of me ether

Sorry to hear Frank hope thinks turn around for you. But I think any of the racing young reading would say oh it won't happen to me. Young people like the one in Jack's story should have the book thrown at them, with minimum 5 year driving suspesion after release, just to make them think twice before they try again. The media reporting it as drag racing is giving a bad name to a sanctioned sport!!

I don't often comment on non tech threads, but Frank I would like to wish you, your family and your son all the hope possible.

That's horrible. I'm very sorry for your loss, and hope for all the best for you and your family.

Something very similar happened to my best friend. Even still, I cant imagine what it would be like if it were one of my kids.

Seems like this is happening to a lot of veterans.

Steve

Frank your son and entire family have my hopes and prayers that things take a good turn very soon.

Thanks for speaking up Frank, it must be tough for you. If your story affects even one person and saves them the pain you, your family, and especially your son are going through, it may make some sense of this madness. My heart goes out to you and yours.

Really sorry to hear that Frank, I have a 23 year old son and a 20 year old daughter, I can't imagine the hell that must be :angry7:

Some of the Hondoids around here had taken to actually racing in a department store parking lot! And also a street in a commercial area that had phone poles less than 5 feet from the curbs.I know kids are dumb sometimes, I know I was, but sheesh!
We looked for steets that were deserted at night, with as few cross streets as possible. I still think someone was looking out for us sometimes.
I sure hope you son pulls through this ok, Frank, and can only imagine what you must be going through.
As for the bike guys, if they crave the thrills so bad, why not take a superbike class at one of the road courses? It sure would be safer.
But then, they wouldn't be kids if they thought that way.
Just got to hope somebody is looking out for them.

My 27 year old son just bought a stinking stunt bike.......

He got rid of his crotch rocket years ago after dumping it twice, and promised his Mom he wouldn't get another bike............Figures...........

It really pains me to hear about the son in a coma..........My heart goes out to you folks.........and I have nightmares about what could happen to my own son..........I wish they'd all wake up, and grow up out of this "jackass" craze that swept through the culture.........

The tuners have calmed down a bit, at least down in Florida...........it's rare to even hear a "boom box" in a car anymore, and street racing has quieted down some..........BUT, as this thread shows, anything can happen.

I hate to say it, but WE are to blame as well.

Think about how many times a member here has posted a video of him getting out on a PUBLIC STREET and doing burnouts etc and other members jump in and say "how cool that was"

I mean really......

Somewhere at somtime we have all been guilty of it. (if you really are a car guy your are guilty). The thing is that now a days the populus is larger than it used to be. Maybe we were lucky to get away with it back then, but in todays world would we have ?

This is not drag racing. Our local track sure wages a war against "street racing" and the owners of the track have even published news articles explaining what the difference between "drag racing sport" and "street racing" is.

The ones of us that are middle to the upper ages need to preach the reality of what can happen to our kids in these instances. That kid that did that... ya he is someones son. Someone could have given a bit more attention to his driving ability and warned him of the dangers. Now that kid could listen to it or not.... but at least he might second guess putting his foot down on the accelerator.

Lets Educate them guys and gals.

Racing is for the track.

I was going to go down a back road and do a fat burnout vid too LOL. But now that I read this. I think your right. It's not very safe. Hmmmmm
Maby I can do it here in the lot of the store with the gate closed.

Good call 68 Sedan.

Thanks

I don't mean to say that ALL the vids of people doing burnouts were a problem. But as I was reading the original post I remembered seeing a burnout on a residential street with a cul-de-sac (if I remember correctly). There were cars parked on both sides of the street at the time.

Just not a smart thing to do.

NOW if you're out in the middle of BFE and the only harm you can to is to yourself (and maybe an unsuspecting mailbox) then have at.

OR a closed off parking lot would work:toothy10:
