It's 1974. Here's why you should get an A-body…

Thanks SSDan.

I like both.....but Chrysler's versions are simply copies of the Nova to compete. No argument there. Just denial if you must.

I spent a LOT of time around novas in the 80's.
Two of my best friends had them and for a long wile, I thought I wanted one.
Both were V8 cars, one was a 4 speed SS.

I can say with some authority that an A body is, in fact a much better car.
From a maintenance and durability perspective... there is no contest.
From a handling perspective...there is no contest.

In comparison to a Duster, a nova feels loose and fragile.

Novas unit body frame sections are bolted through rubber biscuits.
Not solid welded like A body.
All novas are post coupes with door frames.
Novas have a propensity to shear the center pin from the rear axle to leaf spring.
That's why you used to see them "dog track" an awful lot.

Additionally, I'm tall with a long spine.
In a nova (or maverick), I have to slouch, even in bucket seat cars.
Not nearly as bad in a Duster, especially if it has a fiberboard headliner.
There's also the 3/8" spacers that come out from under the seat tracks if necessary.

Very cool.
Thanks Wink, and Dan.

Now I want that Duster.
Cool jade green.
318.
AC.
Rallye wheels.
Fold down seat.

I'm too young to have lived through the era where Darts and Dusters were considered compact cars, so it just seems crazy to me when I come across ads like this one where they tout them as "compact." Now we've got cars that would fit in the bed of a large pickup truck.

Thanks for sharing, Dan.

Vegas...........

In the 70's, stationed at NAS Miramar, San Diego, there was a nice young lady worked at one of the on-base stores. She had divorced her sailer hubby and is the reason she was there, as they had been transferred from the E coast. She had a Vega that was maybe 2? years old. A mess. Had spent most of it's short life out east. Anyhow, she was in the tune-up bay one day, and I said, "OK, I think we're ready to close the hood."

"WAIT," she says, "I have to get my special tools."

Here she comes with 4 HUGE cheap screwdrivers, like you bought out of those big bins back then for .49ea. You had to lower the hood, then jam the drivers into the hood gap BECAUSE THE FENDERS WERE TRYING TO COLLAPSE INWARDS at the top
