My laptop is all slow and the mouse is jerking around, I did a system wipe and reloaded windows 2000 pro. on it and it is still doing it. The task manager says that my CPU usage is at 50% to 52% and that is when it's just sitting with nothing running. How do I fix it?

It's a Dell C610

Windows 2000
Service pack 4
pentium (R) 3
CPU 1200 MHz

Hard drive has 26.4 GB Free and 1.51 GB used

IDK but theres this camera site that has a PC chat line and some very smart-lets say "geeks" are on there and they might give a faster and better answer. Not saying we are dumb. just if you go there and read some of the answers you may see what I mean. Its www.dpreview.com and you go to forums and look down the list untill PC talk. Good luck.

Hey if you ask those guys how to change a spark plug they might say with a hammer but ask them about digitial cameras or computers and they might knock your socks off.

I'm not a puter geek but man 50% at idle is outrageous. Go into your task manager and click on processes and see what's so huge that is running that is causing all the commotion. Have you had it hooked up to the internet? You could have a virus or worm that even wiping the HD didn't fix. If you find something in the task manager that is a very large file running (for instance in mine the biggest is 55K and I have quite a few programs running) you may have found your problem. You can shut them down manually. That may or may not fix the problem though. If it makes the puter run like normal that's probably the problem but you'll need to find all the files associated with it and delete them to fix the problem. Of course before you shut anything down write the name of it down that way you know what to look for to delete files.

A couple months back, I'd have said you're crazy. Reformatting hard drive should clear out everything. But my husband worked on a machine that had a virus/worm/? that kept coming back. Reformat, reload software, would run fine for a couple hours, then the virus/worm/? was back, even though it was not hooked to the internet. We didn't even need to be running anything, just let it sit and suddenly it would show up. Several virus programs would detect it and say it was removed and/or quarantined, but then it was back and they would "detect" it again.

Weird...

Fishy68 is right look under th processes tab abd try to shut down the process that is using a an unusually large amount of resources. There may be several processes running that shouldn't be but you should verify the name of a suspicious before shutting it down. Any virus or malware program that is running must be shut down to be able to remove it manually or through the anti - virus program. Some programs cannot be shut down as the will start up again in 2 to 3 seconds. Others must have the registry key reoved first and this is risky for a normal user, many IT people are uncomfortable with the registry. There are also viruses that take over your anti - virus program. To you it will look like it is running fine, but it is the virus running it. Viruses are intelligent compared to what they used to be. This is probably the best method to beat it. Remove the registry keys that correspond with the process, boot into safe mode and check the registry key to make sure it didnt come back. Typically a virus will not start in safe mode as it only loads services that are absolutely necessary to run windows. Then do a virus scan. If the virus has taken over your anti virus you must start the PC normally then shut down the bad processes and the anti - virus application then go to trendmicro.com and do an online scan. Select heuristic scan so that filles are detected. I have dealt with many of these and they can be tough. If you wish to PM me we can arrange for me to connect to your PC through msn messger and I can remove the virus for you. In the mean time refrain from making on line purchases or checking bank accounts and things of this nature. Good luck.

Like has been said.... Ctrl & Alt & Del

Click on processes. Find the one that is taking up a high percentage of the computing time. Write this down because you'll have to erase it from areas that its been inserted (most likely a virus or spyware).

Right click start Then click search search for links to this program to see where its at. Its probably in the registry and will have to be removed from there as well as the program itself.

It could be incorporated into an existing program thats essential to your computer and you will need to have the knowledge as to whether you can remove it and reload the necessary program. I've removed these from a couple of systems and it can be a pain to get them out.

Someone at a computer geek site may know of a freeware program that will remove these types of programs. I had one that thats how I finally had to getr rid of it.

Did you by chance recently click on a popup window that told you it would fix a problem in your system?

I never click on pop ups and I never open emails from an unknown source. I finally broke down and installed all the MSN crap that came with my qwest dsl disk so I could install the McAfee stuff that came with it. The McAfee virus scaner came up empty along with the spybot SD and about 3 other online scans. So I'm starting to think that my dumbass roommate screwed with some cpu setting or something while she was on myspace looking for a new boyfriend (roommates suck but they pay the bills).
My desktop is fine and I have had the laptop linked to it before so thats why Im starting to think that it's in the settings or maybe it's time to upgrade a few things in the laptop, after all I have had it for about 3 years now.

This is very good advice that 70dart has posted.

BTW - myspace is a good place to pick up viruses.

upgrade to the latest, greatest, processor, a quad-34, then your 50% cpu usage is only 3%.

seriously though, sounds like you have a nasty virus, if you can't get rid of it by deleting or virus checks and it keeps coming back then I would suggest a a complete disk clean. Re-format, not a quick format because it will not set all of your hard disk to zero's, make sure you save any files you don't want to lose first. I have done this before and seems to work. Also see if your hard disk came with any programs that can run a diagnostic check for issues or problems.

Laptops are also known to generate alot of heat. 3-4 years on a laptop hard drive is actually pretty good. Have you gotten any SMART drive errors through xp? If so it may be time to get a new hard drive.

It sounds like a virus. I had McAfee on my last computer and it let a virus in and trashed my hard drive. We cleaned it out by running the full Norton Internet Security and have had no problems since. It picks off viruses every once in while and trashes them. You may want to consider loading just their anti virus program and seeing what it can find but you'll have to unload McAfee first. Also I had my company laptop slow down to a crawl, especially on startup, until a friend told me to put Webroot Spy Sweeper on it. It found over 1000 signatures and 4 programs running in the background which are spyware and adware and the Spybot program which was on the computer didn't find anything so it's a piece of crap also. Yea the computer is fast as lightening again. :)

Demon Seed is right Spysweeper rocks I have the file if you need it. I would say that the virus is definately there but will go undetected unless scanned in safe mode. But it sounds like it has actually taken over your antivirus application , meaning; to you it looks like everything is okay it scans but nothing detected. Shut Macafee down and go online to http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ here youcan do a free online scan and remove viruses. In the registry under hkey local machine>software>microsoft>windows>current version>run you will see everything that is set to start with windows you can delete all entries in here that do not reference macafee. For further info PM me. There is alot of info concerning possibilities.

Some really good advice here from the folks on resolving your problem. One other thing you should definitely do is turn off System Restore when chasing any virus or malware problem. If it isn't turned off, you may indeed eradicate the problem, but then System Restore helpfully puts it right back where it was before. DOOOOOH!! :tool:

I suggest you password protect your PC and ask your roommate to get her own PC.
