Layoff Survival Guide

well I'm gonna be picking up body jobs on the side for now, and I know of a farm that I can work on for some decent money.

Sounds like you have a plan "B". Good deal.

The grocery workers here want to go strike, I'm just waiting..... I'll take that job in a new york second just to get out of the house. Dumbasses. I guess 18 bucks an hour plus ten in benefits isn't enough to stock shelves, I'll do it......

To top it off, they want unemployment benefits while they strike,,, Governor turned them down today. Oddly while I went to get 20 bucks worth of ramen noodles, pasta and tomato sauce today they were very, very nice.

I'll cross that picket line with a axe handle so I can feed myself and dogs some decent food. Ungrates....

I made up a new drink. It's Ron Rico rum (I can't afford Bacardi) and cheap King Soopers Black Cherry Soda.

I call I it the "Cherry Duster", lol. My Duster won't be "Cherry" soon but I can still dream. :)
I just cought up on your thread Joe :read2: I woke up just a few minutes ago with out my right arm.:tongue9:
Butt I found it.:toothy10:
I guess the wife worked me pretty good today in the yard and I fell asleep a couple hours ago on the couch.
You keep on keeping on bro  and I am hoping and praying for you.
This thread has already went to work here on the hill, My nephew glued his self to your thread on the wife's computer while we sat outside with his parent's
He came outside with two pages printed off and headed to his house this evening.
We are going in town tomorrow "wife is on a stay at home vacation" to drain my small stash of cash to pay the taxes on her new 04 Chrysler cross over Pasifica :angry7:
I am looking forward to another day just being with her and I am picking me up some Black Cherry Coke and have one for ya :thumblef: I have got to try your new drink Black Duster.=P~
Well I better get to bed and say a few prayers and rest up for another day.
Thank you for sharring this thread here on the hill :angel4: I think you planted a seed in a 23 year old young gun :thumbrig:
Tomorrow will be a new day my friend.
Your Akansas friend Mike.

You're welcome my brother! I thought for sure you'd have crashed. :)

It's all good and I'm glad I helped someone for Pete's Sake! LOL!

BTW, we should open the bar tomorrow night for all those who have lost their jobs. :) I'll see what I have left in the change jar for some cheap rum. :) We'll post videos and pics, but only that bring good vibes. :)

If your up for it, I am. :) It will be a toast to those of us who are willing, yet unemployed.....

The key is wearing yourself out. I just got a weight bench from a friend. I'm going to kick some ***. If someone doesn't want to hire me I will proceed to become a monster, lol!

Wake up early, walk the dogs, work out, search for jobs, get mad, work out again. Free weights are a good thing. :) Train dogs, pass out. Up again at 6 and do it all all over again.... Making a schedule for yourself is key. I know, I've been where you're at. Can't sleep, can't wake up.

You can do it!

I have been hitting the gym in the morning and night. I do weights in the a.m. then cardio in the p.m. and went from 250lbs. to 245lbs. in about 2 weeks. hopefully i'll get back down to 200-205. keeps my head on straight and away from the T.V. I'm even thinking of taking a welding class to have another skill under my belt.

I have been trying to get up early and get some more job hunting done but today I messed up and forgot to set the alarm. oops.

D@mn bro! That's the key. I'm trying to get down to 190-195, that's my fighting weight. :) I'm only 5'11 though but I'm big boned, lol! I'm 210 right now...

You and everyone else is allowed to slip, but not for long. :) I should be in bed too, but the dogs will get me up @ 6 anyway.

Yeah i'm only about 5'10" but I used to do ALOT of lifting. i got caught up in the whole bigger, stronger B.S. of course it would take me a week to run a mile! LOL.

Its a good thing you got the dogs too to keep you busy. all I got is a fat skiddish cat.

LOL! Yeah buddy, 170-180 pounds of dogs is hard to ignore... This song is going in the alarm (yep, it wakes with a CD, cool Christmas gift from years gone by). Here's the words and I think they they fit our (and all our unemployed Mopar buds) feelings....

by Gregg Allman

Just one more mornin'
I had to wake up with the blues
Pulled myself outta bed … yeah
Put on my walkin' shoes
Went up on the mountain
To see what I could see
The whole world was fallin' … right down in front of me

'Cause I’ve a hunger … for dreams I'll never see
Yeah baby
Ohh-ahhh, help me baby … ohhh … or this will surely be … the end of me, yeah

Pull myself together … put on a new face
Climb down off the hilltop, baby
Get back in the race

Ohhh … 'cause I’ve a hunger … for dreams I'll never see
Yeah baby … yeah huh
Ahhh … help me baby … ohhh … or this will surely be … the end of me, yeah

Pull myself together … put on a new face
Climb down off the hilltop, baby
Get back in the race

'Cause I’ve a hunger … for dreams I'll never see
Yeah baby … ohhhahhh
Ahhh … help me baby … ohhh … or this will surely be … the end of me, yeah

I can always take nap with the dogs later......LOL!

Work three days this week subbing, put in about 14 hours total, not much, but better than nothing...........everyone keep your chin up in this market it takes time.........

I just thought I'd post this up again for all those looking for a job, creating a resume, and just trying to survive these hard times. Please peruse this entire thread for some good advice on job hunting, resume building, interview tips and surviving a layoff.

Great reading here. I did pretty much exactly the same things when I got let go in 2008. I gave alot of labor on the side to gather tools and such while I was unemployed. 8 months later I opened my company for buisness. Kind of unrelated but, one time I filled out an application for a company I was interested in working for. One section on the form asked for Special Skills. I listed a few things and followed up with: able to leap tall buildings in a single bound. During the interview the three interviewers asked me to demonstrate this particular skill. I pardoned myself and asked if there was a phone booth nearby that was available. We all had a laugh and it worked as an icebreaker. Hope all is well, take care.

Doing very well now. :) I've had a job since the first week of November 2009 and it took a year or so to get back up to speed but things are rolling right along.

Great idea to get ones self noticed, lol! :toothy7:

So, you’ve been laid off. First thing I have to tell you is that it’s not the end of the world and may well end up being a change for the better. Being laid off is right up there on the stress-o-meter with getting divorced or losing a family member and you will need go through similar stages of recovery.

The first is shock, the second is anger, the third is mourning, the forth is depression and the fifth is acceptance. Everyone is different when it comes to getting through this but behooves you to get through this as quickly as possible. A positive attitude is essential to getting another job and to allow your creativity to flow when writing a resume and cover letter (we’ll get to that later). I got through the stages 1through 3 in about a week. 4 through 5 took a bit longer. Here are some things that helped me:

1. Make a list of chores that need to be done but don’t cost any or little money like organizing the garage or basement, digging a garden, fixing little stuff around the house, etc.

2. Get outside everyday! I can’t stress how important this is. It’s easy if you have a dog. :) Take him for an extended walk. He’ll love you for it and you’ll feel refreshed when you get back home. Take a bike ride if you can or just a walk through the local forest preserve or park. Start working out. Split some wood if you live in the country. Exercise releases nature’s most powerful anti-depressant called “endorphins”.

3. Don’t drink or drug after the first day. It exacerbates depression and hangovers are not productive. Also, many jobs now require a urine and/or hair follicle test. You could ruin your chances of ever getting a job.

4. Turn off the TV. It’s mind numbing crap for the most part.

5. Read both fiction and non-fiction. Fiction based books will keep you creative and some non-fiction books pertaining to your job skills will keep you sharp.

6. Apply for Unemployment Insurance immediately!! More on this in the first section.

7. Set your alarm and wake up the same time everyday. Don’t allow yourself to stay up late and wake up late. It’s a bad pattern to slip into and exacerbates depression.

For ease of navigation I am going to divide the rest into sections in the following manner:

1. Unemployment Insurance
2. Resume Building
3. Cover Letter writing
4. What’s a salary history?
5. Professional and Personal references
6. Job Resources
7. Cost cutting at home

Please feel free to add your ideas and ask questions as I write this. It’s a monumental task and I’ve never done anything like this before. I feel that I owe the people on this board for being so supportive during my time of unemployment and anything I can do to pay y’all back really makes my day. Remember the saying “Give a man a fish and he eats for a day, teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime”? That is the vein that I write this in. :)

More to come. 8)

This is an incredible thread and needs more exposure in these trying times. I just gotta bump this one again bro.......!!
