Well today I plan on installing my bump shaft.I do know2 to lube it real well and the bottoms of the lifters,this is a hyd cam that I am working on, question should the lifters be installed dry or should they be submersed in a can of oil first.
 
The lifters need to spin so you need oil in the lifter bores of the block and the sides of the lifter. Your moly or whatever break in cam lube you are using should only be on the face or bottom of the lifter and the cam.
 
Use the cam grease on the top and bottom of the lifter. I've always filled the lifter with engine oil using a pump type oil can. Then I prime the engine oil using a drill and rod to the pump. Haven't had a problem, yet.
 
I use oil on the sides, and break in lube on the faces. But before I do that, I install them dry and with no rocker gear in place, mark the tops and the bores and verify they all spin as the cam turns. Sometimes you have to swap a few in different holes to get them all to turn. Then, cost the lobe and base with lube, the sides get a quick squirt of oil, and in they go. You do not have to pre-fill them.
 
coat the bottom of the lifters with lube...but do not fill them will oil...

you dont want the lifters pumped up went the engine goes to start the first time...you can hang open a valve and bend valve and/or pushrod....

the lifters will fill with oil as soon as the engine fires...
 
I put break in lube on the foot of the lifter and oil the sides when I put them in. next I adjust all the valves and then when they are all set I prime the motor while hand cranking it a couple times. that does two things, first it pumps the lifters up after the valve lash is set so you don't hang a valve open, plus it allows you to check for a bunk lifter that won't pump up so you don't wipe a lobe. learned that one on my last cam swap.
