Finally got her out for a good test drive and was able to get a real gas mileage count over the weekend.
Drove a 350 miles round trip to my Brother's house over by Kingman to help him fix an apparent failed fuel pump in his 2001 Toyota Tundra pickup.

Mild built 5.9 Magnum with 1 /58 tube headers, Edelbrock dual plane Performer intake and 600 Performer carb.
A500 overdrive (42RH trans with 2.73 rear gears)

My old combo (318 and 904) with all the same add on's got 17mpg at 80 miles per hour on the open freeway at 2,800 RPM's. (we took it to the CA coast 3-4 times in the last couple of years) so I know that was a pretty accurate account on the mileage.

The 350+hp 5.9 and 42RH got 25mpg at 90mph at 2,000 RPM's on Interstate 40.
About 8 miles to the gallon better mileage and 1,000 less RPM's that the 318 and 904.
Not one problem with the car anywhere and was running 220 degrees in a few places like going over the hill to Laughlin Nevada for dinner on the river and a few spins of the slot machines where it was 104 degrees.
It only takes about 1/2 inch of gas pedal to maintain that 90 mph, and once in converter lockup everything runs cooler from the lack of heat generated by the slip of the converter.

I must say.....impressed. !!!

I'm tickled to death with it, and when my Brother and I went into town to get a new battery for his truck, I got on it and blew tire smoke almost all the way up the onramp, with both tires since I was in a slight left turn. :D
I can hardly wait to get the 8.25 sure grip with jeep gearing and disc brakes.

NICE!!! Gives me high hopes for my magnum/5 speed swap!!

One question, how the heck does that thing breathe?? 1/58 headers are TINY!!!!! :D

Thanks everyone, it's nice to have it all done and not have to go back and redo something.
It all just works. :D

1/57 is too small. LOL

I'm thinking that hood scoop was good for +1 or 2...

I was thinking -1 or 2 (degrees) :D
Can't even go get gas without getting accosted by someone about the car.
Price ya pay for being so dang cool I guess. LOL

Technically 1/57 is bigger than 1/58, so as I was saying, how does that thing breath?? :D

LOL! Just givin us some of your own:D but congrats on the awesome setup! I might have to pester you in a few years about the 42rh setup as I'd like to put an SRT4/42rh combo in my 67 valiant 4 door then for a fun, fuel efficient, family cruiser

Overdrive is your friend!!! Glad it did so well, I have often wondered what the diff would be between EFI and carb...less than 3 mpg in this instance. The 71 I built with OD had 8 3/4 3.23 SG and got 26+ MPG at 80 with A/C cranked to 11. I know you have put a lot of hard work on it, nice to see it pay off in such a satisfying way.

Hell yes,Greg... Nice to see improvement, with late model hot rodding..It's a whole new world..

Any time, just ask.

With the rear end gears I have I don't really even need the lockup function, but when I put the Cherokee rear end in it that'll change because of the lower gearing.
I am running an A/F of about 14:1 average, so it's not like I'm dumping more fuel than it needs or anything.
One thing I was leery of was detonation at the lower RPM's of OD with lockup under a road speed load, but I was a little comforted that my mechanical timing doesn't start coming in until a bit after 2k (2-2.5).
The vacuum advance is in play at those throttle openings and RPM's though, and I run an initial of 20.
Never heard it and was even running 87 fuel, so it can't be to far off.

Thanks Evan.

Best three days I have spent on the car in awhile Tim.
Looking forward to coming out your way again and visiting, as it's been awhile.
You can test drive it for me. :D
