I am in the beginning stages of rebuilding my 72 340. Thinking about adding a MSD distributor and would like to see if this alternator from Summit is overkill with what it puts out for amps. it is a Internal Regulator, 80 Amp, Chrome Plated, 1-Wire, 2-Groove Pulley one. I appreciate all the help I can get. Thanks in advance.

You should not need additional amps unless you have added things to the car that draw power.

I would save yourself headaches and just get a stock rebuild.

If you add amperage capabilities to the alternator your stock wiring could have a meltdown so you will need to make wiring upgrades and changes.

I agree. The harness was designed for a certain amperage load (add in factors like connectors and old wiring) and trying to stuff more voltage thru it will cause the possibility of fire or damage.
