Sound better?
Nissan's RB26 in the Skyline is one of the best sounding straight 6's I've ever heard. But it has a shorter stroke and revs a lot higher than a Slant 6.Nothing but a V8 sounds good if we are being truly honest. Next best thing is the big bore piston aircraft engines of WW 2
Let's see what you have now.1-5-3-6-2-4-1-5-3-6-2-4-1-5-3-6-2-4-1-5-3-6-2-4,
it's a sewing machine.
I bought my first slanty car in about 74.
Within a few months, there was a junkyard 340 under the hood; with fenderwell headers, 2" duals, ~6 ft of straight pipes, a pair of long Thrush straight-thrus, and more straight pipes, under the axle, out to the back.
No more sewing machine for me.
V8 cadence. Halleluyah.
Where could you fit 6 ft if straight pipe? Do you mean 2 3 ft sections? Cause 6ft ain't fittin under an A body.6 ft of straight pipes,
Really, my Slant sounds just like a V-8 at idle and cruise. When you floor it, that six sound shows up.Nothing but a V8 sounds good if we are being truly honest. Next best thing is the big bore piston aircraft engines of WW 2
You go ahead and & tell yourself that.... 75% of the people will probably believe you... But people who actually use their ears know better...Really, my Slant sounds just like a V-8 at idle and cruise. When you floor it, that six sound shows up.
Well here's the thing. I'm sure you never had a Slant with Headers and the right exhaust combo WildRT. Have you? Haha, I already knew that. You go ahead and & tell yourself that.... 75% of the people will probably believe you... But people who actually use their ears know better...
I know a local guy with that combo & while it does sound better than most slant sixes it doesn't sound like a V8... He also has a 4bbl & a cam..Well here's the thing. I'm sure you never had a Slant with Headers and the right exhaust combo WildRT. Have you? Haha, I already knew that.
Maybe not under your A-body.Where could you fit 6 ft if straight pipe? Do you mean 2 3 ft sections? Cause 6ft ain't fittin under an A body.
Yours either, since you don't have one.Maybe not under your A-body.
I don’t think that was the OP’s intention. He just wanted something that sounds “better”, which is understandable. What's the point of even trying to get a slant to sound like a V8? If you want a V8 that bad, just do an engine swap.
At rpm, it'll still sound like a slant regardless.
That's what I was worried about with mine. Over 10:1 with headers and a big cam can make for some serious noise in a slant 6, but it turned out really nice.I don’t think that was the OP’s intention. He just wanted something that sounds “better”, which is understandable.
The slant has two very annoying exhaust characteristics; drone and buzz. Both can be remedied with proper exhaust sizing/muffler selection/resonator combo…or a turbo.
For a near stock setup, I like 2.5” head pipe, 20” case muffler(not a turbo style) 2.25” tail pipe and 18” bullet style resonator before the bumper.
This makes for a decent idle, no drone and reduces the buzz to a deep, tuned sound. A lot of $$$ trial and error have gone into finding this combo, and lots of lost $$$ on an exhaust system that sounds terrible.
Oh I know. I was just referring to the guy claiming his slant sounds like a V8. I shoulda made that more clear.I don’t think that was the OP’s intention.

Im a slant guy and I hate the buzz lol it’s definitely a negative IMO but not insurmountable.Oh I know. I was just referring to the guy claiming his slant sounds like a V8. I shoulda made that more clear.
Some slants certainly sound great, especially at idle, but none sound like a V8. At the same time, if you're a slant guy, why would you even want that? Embrace the buzz.![]()
"Dope af".... Huh? Talk English please.I've always thought 6 into 6, with the pipes rearranged to exit in firing order, exiting under the driver rocker panel would sound dope AF at a slow idle
What's wrong with thatAt rpm, it'll still sound like a slant regardless.
NothingWhat's wrong with that
