Mini Tub Measurements

I haven't started on my first mini tub job yet, but have been given a narrowed 9" Ford rear-end with Chevrolet axles built for a mini-tubbed 67' Nova my brother runs. The rear-end is 38 1/2" long without axles. So, has anyone out there performed a complete mini-tub on a 1967-69 Dart, one that did not facilitate removal of the gas tank (when complete), or had to customize the rear deck lid brackets? And if so, would you mind relating the installed width with tub job completed and or installed rear-end that was being used? Thanks for all your help FABO!:glasses7:

Measure your outer frame rail width, above the rear end, outside to outside. That will be the width after mini tub.

Doing a mini tub with the gas tank installed IMO isnt a good idea. Has that rear been offest to accomidate for the mopar offset? Im guessing not. See with mopar rears the offset is in the center section not like other rears from other makers. For instance my Dana I had built from a truck axle is longer on the driver side then the passanger side. I did mine on a 72 Scamp but pretty much the same. Cutting the tubs is just part of the job to take advantage of that is doing the spring relocation. But last lastly what BS wheel are you running? 38 1/2 is really short. Mine dana housing was 45 5/16 and that was with a 4.5 BS I believe thats was REALLY pushing the limits of the mini tub. Im almost going to say that rear you have will be too short.

I understand. I may have given the idea that I would leave the gas tank in while performing a mini-tub job. I would not, but would want to retain the gas tank just the same. And yes, my assumption was that the rear-end was too short for this make of car, but trying to get a good idea before I use it for trade. I have seen the shortened for mini-tub rear-end measurement of approximately 45" before, so your message pretty much reaffirms that. Thanks for your help.

Frame width is right at 38.5" so there little to no chance that rear would fit. You'd be stacking the perches right at the housing end and any backing plate offset would REALLY screw the pooch.

Getting it "retubbed" is not going to change the width of his frame rails. The rear end is too narrow for his application.

Sell it and use the money to help buy one that fits...

Retubbing would make the rear longer. Which could work with his application. Getting new axles tubes and ends might be cheaper then a new rear was what I was saying.

Sorry, didn't catch that. I thought you were saying re-do his mini tub (which he hasn't started yet, lol). Retubing vs retubbing.

He would also need new axles to go along with his longer axle tubes and ends. Better off just starting over, in my opinion.
