Most Likely Reason to Find a Groove/Scoring in a Rod Bearing?

When i disassembled the used 340 (the bores were .040 over and crank .010 under) i found one (and only one) rod bearing had a single deep groove/cut 360 degrees through it. Don't have a foto at the moment, but I am now beginning to think this may have been the fault of not having polished around the rod journal oil hole after the previous owner had the crankshaft ground. It would be easy to miss a little burr if rushed (or had your head up your a**). I provide this anecdote just a reminder for those getting ready for their own small block final assembly.
