When decoding the casting number on the block it say the Family code is LA can anyone tell me what that means?

LA is a term used for these engines:
'64-'69 273
'67-later 318
'68-'73 340
'71-later 360
There is also the B series (350,361,'61-up 383,400) and the RB series ('59-'60 383,413,426,440).

Its from California :D.
jk...
Like Wish noted...LA means it is the "normal" small block Mopar as opposed to the 318 Poly and later Magnum versions.

I believe it stood for Lite Alloy..I remember reading that they were lighter than the old "Poly" 318 "A" and were referred as "LA"

I always thought it stood for "Late A" engine. The poly engines were referred to as "A" engines, so the later block was the "Late A" block.
