Started asking some questions on my new to the club post, figure I should move this question here. A few very helpful people gave me some tips to find out what V8 I have in this truck I bought last week, owner told me it was a 273....but the code one the driver side of block facing forward under the head reads...PM318R 22670953
Guessing its a 318, how do I figure out what year it is, taking this as good news and not going to dwell on the fact I was lied to, keep moving forward!

Probably a 318 for sure but the number doesn't make any sense.

PM318R 22670953

PM - Mound Road assembly plant

318 - 318 CID

R - Regular fuel recommended

2267 - Final engine assembly date - October 12, 1967 (1968 model year)

0953 - 953rd engine assembly completed at the plant above on the date above.

If it helps at all......

The numbers on the front face of the small blocks are the engine serial number & are not related to the cars VIN, they were stamped well before the engine assemblies were sent to the various car assembly lines at the various plants.

PM= Mound Road Plant
318= engine size
R= Regular gas
2267= 103 day of 1968 which is April 12 1968
0953= 953 engine built that day

I came up with a build date of April 1968. Either way, you will know what year to say when you order parts.

Interesting stuff. I looked it up as a casting number. No wonder why it didn't make sense.

Not according to the B.R. Hembree Decoding guide. 1968 production numbers start at 2164 and end in 2529. 2267-2164 =103 day of 1968 which is April 12 1968

The guys have the dates correct I'm sure.
It's also plain as day next to the passenger side motor mount ears of the block.

What last 3 casting numbers on the heads? 920? 234? 675?

I never noticed this before but I have had a lot of 340's the 68 that was 6-21-67 cast, has a DW340P, the 69 is EW340P, the 70 is FW340P, the 71 is GW340P, so the first letter is the year, second the plant Windsor, the 340 is cu in, 4th P or R, fuel. So why is the 68 318 a PM318R. I also have a 67 383 that says C383 and a 68 that says D383

Shot in the dark, they carried on from where 318 polys left off.

All three of your 340's fall in the correct year by this book. Book also states the not all blocks are stamped with the the assembly plant.
He also states"not all EIC's conform to all published standards." "Some engines have no stamped codes." Big blocks have been pretty consistent with there Letters stamped before the CID. C=1967,D=1968,E- 1969, etc

The D, E, F etc. are the series aka model year.

D - 1968

E- 1967

F - 1970

Yes, as far as I've seen anyway, so FWIW, all 318s this side of the poly (LA Designation) had hydraulic lifters. If you can, give us a picture of the head castig numbers. Nothing wrong with a 318 at all, especially given overall performance potential and parts availability.
