C130 Chief is exactly right.
I'm in management, and believe me, we spot the bad attitudes a mile away. Hard to hide it. Attitude goes a heck of a long way in job success and working your way up if that's what you choose to do. The team building things... well, some companies don't do them very well, but sometimes they do, and sometimes the management actually knows a thing or two you could learn. It's all what you, and the other employees put into it. Good management can only do so much to lead the team and work on improving things for everyone. Then you have to come the rest of the way. You have to remember that ultimately, you're all on the same team, working toward the success of the company. You seem to have a very bad attitude about this parent company, but based on what you said, it also sounds like without their involvement, the company you work for might not even be around anymore? They must have brought some value to the table in some way. Whether they're all good or not, you may want to consider that, and look at the bright side here.
Suck it up, go to Chicago, make the most of it, have a good attitude (or fake it until you can). Too bad I couldn't have taken your place, I'd love a free trip, even if it's just to Chicago (I used to live there, great city). You'll probably have more time to explore than you realize.
I do get the away from family thing, by the way, that is unfortunate. Been there done that. Even had to work 2nd shift for some years way back and rarely ever got to see any friends or family. Sometimes sacrifices must be made, it's not always all roses in life, sorry, best you learn that now while you are still young.
When you return, come back and tell us what a great time you had.
