My Street Demon install experience

-
Took about an hour to remove the tank. Mine is an early 71 tank with 4 vent lines. Bottom of the tank looked pretty good but the walls have a thick coat of rust. I have elected to order a new Spectra Premium CR11D tank.

WHAT ELSE SHOULD I ORDER???? sending unit? filler neck to tank seal?

The filler neck looked pretty good. Just needs some light cleaned up.

Tank pad looks ok. I think I can peel it off and reuse.

Gas guage doesnt work and the original sending unit looks pretty nasty. Are all the aftermarker sending units junk????

Yes, all aftermarket sending units are not calibrated accurately for all makes and models. However, they can be calibrated to be fairly accurate. But, it takes a lot of adjusting, adjusting a dozen more times after the first dozen times. A rain dance from midget **** stars, some pixie dust from the moon sprinkled on them and a few other things I am forgetting. But, they can be made to work. They’re all the same. China

sounds like the rebuilder F'd up. I like that Street Demon design myself. I feel the TQ was the leading edge in carburetor design when it was introduced.

No, I put them in there. I think this was one that got a pair of the floats made upside down before I caught what was going on. There's still a lot of them out there, so you have to be careful.

OOF, this guy caught them too! That's some bad luck there.....@0:36

So I got the tank and sending unit ready to install. The last 6 to 8" of the fuel filler neck that protrudes into the tank was kinda krusty so I sanded, filed, and got as much of the crud off as I could. My question is....

Should I replace the fuel filler neck too or just clean it up and call it a day?

If replace, who has the filler neck for a 71 Dart Swinger with the 4 vent line tank?

I just cleaned up the filler neck on my car when I installed a new tank and feed line. I'm all for replacing parts when they need it or could affect performance, but in this case I called it good.

Ok, so it clogged another filter in about 20 miles of driving so looks like I’m gonna have to drain/remove/clean or possibly replace the tank. Now I gotta figure out how to drain, filter, and store about 8 to 10 gallons of gas til this gets done.
I wouldnt use that polluted fuel. maybe in my old pickup, but it has a big gas filter.
Guess if you want to save the gas, then get a Mr Funnel. They are about the best for straining gas.

It ended up being about a gallon of gas. I filtered it thru a couple paint strainers and I'll just use it in the mower.

New Spectra tank installed and new pick up. The trash from the tank killed the new fuel pump too so I replaced it. Engine runs good now. Gonna retune idle mixture and fix an oil leak and figure out how to get the power steering bled and I'm ready to cruise!!!

Power steering doesent usually need to be bled. If its airlocked, engine off and wheels off the ground. Crank wheel end to end.

Your insane for replacing that tank. There’s absolutely, nothing wrong with it. It’s in incredible condition. All you have to do is buy a couple gallons of Evaporust. Slosh it around in there for a couple days. The rust will be gone. If you feel very frisky. Seal it with a $20 can of Por-15 tank sealer. Add 2 filters. I’m all for replacing a tank when it needs to be. But, that’s a total waste of money considering it’s condition.

Not insane. Add in at least half a day of screwing around dealing with chemicals and you're well on the way to a new tank. Some things just aren't worth messing with unless you absolutely have to. I'm all for saving parts, but this is an easy decision.

Oh I'm clearly insane but that's beside the point. New tank and sending unit are working great. The Spectra tank fit beautifully and the sending unit sealed just with with the Spectra locking nut and a lil gasket dressing for good measure. On the to the next project!! I will save the old tank just in case.

Thank you to everyone for your tips and advice.

Is the car running good now?

yep, took a nice long drive. Still need to do some fine tuning on the carb, choke, and kick down but I’m definitely at a good baseline now.

so in summary. New tank, new sending unit, new carb, new fuel pump, new fuel filters. About $550 for everything.

I've seen many members pay more than that just for a carburetor...

When you get real brave try tuning two...

So I gave up on the rebuilt Thermoquad and I purchased a new Street Demon 625. I had it up and running within a hour. I called Holley customer support and they sent me the new style Chrylser throttle stud for FREE. My throttle cable bracket didn't align with the street demon linkage. I solved the issue by drilling out the end of the throttle cable and putting it on the same side as the kickdown linkage. There doesn't seem to be any interference or binding this way. I used a tiny E clip to provide a stop between the kickdown and throttle cable.

Idles well around 800 rpm with my lumpy purple shaft cam and pulls about 15hg with the vacuum advance plugged. Throttle response is awesome and I had no issues with my air cleaner hitting the choke or clearance issues with the hood. More pics to follow.

I'm still adjusting the choke to get it to start on the first try. I wired it to the blue field wire on my dual field alternator.

I'm also only able to run about 5 degrees of initial timing at the moment without detonation. Could be old gas or wrong plugs or broken advance spring on the distributor.

I am very curious on what your outcome is. I have a 340LA engine going in soon and am ready to learn just how I can still use my stock set-up. I will watch this as you post. I bought the entire Lokar throttle and kickdown bracket set-up, but alas, with my engine not here, It's tough to trial-by-fire on this. Can you do me a favor and post pics of your fuel set-up? I am converting from 2BBL to this. I am still using my mechanical fuel pump as well. Thanks for supplying images. It helps everyone out!
