Nascar 340 Engines

Naw nobody thinks anybody's thick. Yeah you got it about right. The Chrysler corporation had nothing to do with NASCAR other than sponsoring teams with parts and money. Parts through hmmmmm......probably that far back Hustle Stuff and shortly thereafter Direct Connection. Those were the performance end of Chrysler back then. The NASCAR engines were different than what was available in what you could by from dealers too. Much higher performance parts. Then the race teams modified them even further through their own R&D......and a lot of times cheatin. LOL

I feel I should clarify my previous post as some people get confused when multiple thoughts are occuring in one thread.

In the good old days(60's and 70's) Mopars were...Mopars. Same can be said for Ford and GM. BUT, don't fool yourself into thinking that Mopar showed up 30yrs later with an LA motor and started kicking ***. No matter how big of a Mopar fan you are... common sense says otherwise.
 
I was looking at a 71 RR hardtop at a car show. Some tool walks up and says he had one of them 71 road runners once, it was a convertible too. I looked at him and said, not without some creative sawsall work you didnt.
 
What were the "305" Mopar engines that we saw in NASCAR right after they banned the Hemi?

No. Dusters were never approved for Nascar racing. The bigger B bodies chargers, road runners etc were. Then engines in those cars were heavily modified, bored, stroked etc into a 358. By individual teams, not by Nascar themselves. Any Race car, Nascar or other wise by that time would have not been factory made. Closest thing would have been the 69 Daytona and 70 Superbird to factory built race cars, but even then, most of those were 383 and 440 versions, very few Hemis and even fewer got the "race Hemi"s.

Bottomline, the 340 in the duster was simply that, a 340. A mean little monster but not a dedicated Nascar engine.

I love all the wives tales that get tossed out there at car shows...
Reminds me of the little known fact that ANY SBC that is ever removed from any GM product, and comes in contact with ANY garage floor, instantly becomes a "Corvette Motor" :p
 
In the mid 70s we liked a 340 out of a 70 swinger. It had the thick webs for 4 bolt mains, but only had 2 bolt mains. Can’t remember seeing T/A on the block either. Was supposed to be original to the car. Can’t say as never checked any further. Kim

Yep I bet it was a TA block even if it was original to th car. There's always stories of a few extra blocks used up in passenger cars.

Same with the "010" blocks. If I've heard it once, I've heard it a thousand times. "That thar's a 010 block. That means it's high nickle, Corvette motor". My big old butt. The 010 blocks came in everything from Corvettes, to trucks, to Caprices, Novas, you name it.
