Then you have a later model 904 (69-later) and likely don't have your backup lights connected, either. The center prong provides ground for the starter relay in park and neutral. The outer pins are connected in reverse for the backup lights.
 

Ditto. I don't think it has anything to do with the engine or tranny, just the year. I think a 1 pin NSS will fit the tranny, if you want a direct connection to your earlier wiring harness, otherwise, adapt a 3-wire connector (use only center wire).
 
The early NSS will fit, but the rooster comb may or may not operate it properly...
