Original bb bell on the left, new aluminum on the right.

What are the extra threaded holes for in the aluminum bell?

The bell housing on the left in the picture has the bolt pattern for the A833 4-speed transmission only.

The bell housing on the right in the picture has a dual bolt pattern for the A833 4-speed transmission or the A230 3-speed transmission.

Those new bell housings need to be indicated in.

I had a friend give me a Pontiac bell housing because he bought a new one like that and I ended up trading him the old one back for the new one because that new one was a ton off.

It doesn’t really matter on the dyno but in the car it would have been an issue.

People put the 3 speed behind a bb?

The three speed manual transmission was standard equipment in many low to mid price class cars through the 1960s into the early 1970s, including big blocks through the 383 engine, and larger in some cases.. Column shift was standard equipment in many of these, but floor shift was also available and standard equipment in some. 1962 413 and 1963 426 Max Wedge engines used the Borg Warner T-85 three speed manual transmission if equipped as a manual. Some standard 413s as well as 383s and 361s were available with the A-745 three speed manual transmission. Several combinations were possible.

The standard equipment transmission in 383 high performance E-bodies used a three speed manual transmission. I had a 1971 Challenger R/T with 383 Magnum that was factory equipped with the three speed transmission and floor shifter as shown in the following image from the 1971 Dealer Data Book:
