New Comp cam issues

My 440 / 500 stroker sounds terrible. Same issue. Running great for 8 years. Now a couple of lifters are spongey so I'm going to just go Solid lifters

How terrible? Like a knocking sound under the intake

Not to sound silly but have you checked your torque converter bolts? It will sound exactly like a knock when they come loose and i have seen it happen sooo many times, take 5 mins to check em..

4 speed and this noise didn't start until I changed the cam I had a solid lifter 340 and it doesn't sound like that this cam is hydraulic

My experience has been that fast rate Hyd cams in combination with lifters that are on the high end of bleed down rate are noisier than many of their SFT counterparts.
And I find the noise they do make not very satisfying.

However, if the OP has a real “clacker”(or more than one), it’s likely something other than the typical “fast rate” thrash.

I’d be pulling the valve covers and giving everything a thorough looking at.

Yes, solid roller if i find a set for a decent price.. did research on it and supposedly it's not an issue.
FWIW
I used solid roller lifters on a hydraulic roller
Cam in a sbc about 3 years ago
He brought it to me yesterday just check it over.
Almost all were exactly where I set them
.003" cold
A few were around .005"
He has 3500 miles on it so far.
I was Super happy about that since that's the first time I've done that.
Saw it on Engine Masters and had to try it.
On someone else's chevy...lol

To the op
I have that same xe268 in my 340
It's noisy too
I've had 3 sets of lifters on that cam
The current set have been the quietest
N.o.s. crane
It's still noisy but doesn't bleed down like it had with the other lifters.
I hope you get yours figured out.

Thank you I understand that it's going to be noisy but it's almost like a knocking sound going to check everything again

nice, i just need to get a set... i believe the heads would have to come off for the change, so probably on the next motor

Maybe try tighter or looser lifter preload?

I've got a Comp custom grind with similar lobes in my 340 (Mopar Xtreme line) and it does clatter a tiny bit, but it's not bad in my opinion.

If the noise is centered in one area of the engine, it's not the lobes. Something's going on. Time to pull a valve cover and investigate.

THIS^^^^^^^

I’d run at least 1.5 turns and 2 turns won’t hurt.

I’d try that first.

I changed everything over to solid lifters and adjustable rockers and it's fine now I was told by a engine builder that the geometry wasn't right for the 318 with 340 X heads to run hydraulic rockers and lifters now it runs great thank you all for your input

Well, he was wrong, but I'm glad you got it resolved.
