Hey all. I have been looking for an 8 1/4 to replace my 7 1/4 but cant seem to find one. I was wondering if there is another option for our a bodies. Not that I want to use ferd parts but i have heard for non-mopar guys that the 8.8 from an exployer will fit. anyone know? thanks for all the help you here have given me.

A friend of mine just bought a 64 Rambler that has a 92 Ford Ranger 8.8" rearend in it and it is within 1/4" of the exact width of a 67-73 A-body (hard to measure in the car and be totally exact). You'd have to whack off all the factory brackets and weld on spring perches but that wouldn't be much work. alot of parts for them cheap too. We bought a brand new ring and pinion set off of E-bag for $90 shipped.

A few weeks back I saw a exploder rearend on Craigslist dirt cheap. Said it had 3:73 gears and posi so I e-mailed him and he said the width is 59-1/2" wide so that's a few inches wider than an A-body rear but you could still use it with wheels that were offset enough.

you'd have to cut the perch's but early Dakota's are close

When you say early how early you talking? I had a 93 Dakota and it was 63" wide drum to drum. Way to wide to use in an A-body. I thought all Daks from 87 up to the new body style (96?) were the same width.

thanks for all the info. I guess I need to do some soul searching. I have an 8 3/4 out of a 65 B-body. But my motor is a /6 and I plan to keep it that way. and i just thought it would be overkill to put it on the 71 Swinger. So on the the throne....

Why don't you just keep the 7-1/4? It's strong enough for any stock /6 and the car will probably be faster and get better fuel mileage with it due to it's light weight and less drag.

I think is that it starting to give out on me. when I drive I am getting a viberation. When I jack it up and rolled the wheel I could feel something. Hard to explane, but like a faint click about every inch of rotating. So since I might need one may as well get a 8 1/4. But I may just find me a 7 1/4 and be done with it. Oh but I need a 4.5inch bolt pattern.
Anyone have one?
