A story from earlier this year which I thought was interesting...

[ame="http://youtu.be/lCpaCAfhCH4"]302 Found[/ame]

Earlier this year, videos of a "Death Race" convoy of Ferraris, Ford GTs and other sports cars being led up the Garden State Parkway at speeds of up to 100 mph by New Jersey State Troopers caused an uproar -- and embarrassment for one of the drivers, then-New York Giants running back Brandon Jacobs. After a long investigation, New Jersey officials have now charged two troopers for providing the free escort and attempting to cover up their roles. New Jersey won't let you pump your own gas on its turnpikes, but from now on the supercar rallies will be strictly self-service.

New Jersey Attorney General Jeff Chiesa charged Sgt. 1st Class Nadir Nassry and Trooper Joseph Ventrella with fasifying records, after the two used electrical tape to hide their license plates during the drive in March and told rally drivers to do the same so that toll cameras couldn't capture their speed. Nassry, a 25-year veteran, resigned Wednesday, saying Ventrella deserved some leniency but denied criminal wrongdoing, saying in a statement:

"I fully realize this matter has caused my superiors significant embarrassment and also has impacted the trust that the public has with regard to the great character of the New Jersey State Police. For this, I must take full responsibility."

The investigation revealed that the escorts had been granted routinely to the Driving Force Club, a New York-area collection of about 25 supercar owners including Jacobs who were driving to Atlantic City. (The "Death Race" name came from one of the bystanders who filed a complaint.)

In addition to the two troopers charged for this year's race, five other troopers face administrative charges for a drive in 2010 which was caught on video by a pair of over-stimulated, potty-mouthed motorists, who saw the drive speed by a trooper giving tickets to slower motorists.

As for the supercar owners who actually drove their cars at triple-digit speeds, they will not face punishment because the statute of limitations on their tickets has expired. It's too bad, because New Jersey rest stops could always use a few extra hands on trash pickup.

Who got hurt ?

Video cameras have caused some much bull, things used to be cooler without them.

Way back in the 1980's michigan had its own police for the big semi rigs. Motor carrier officers there were - well maybe we still have them but back then they only could enforce trucking laws. I seen one once doing a good 90 on the interstate and passes me by, I nailed it -- in the 1970 Olds a year before before I totaled it out. About 110 I started gaining on it and was able to edge out ahead of it. Was some big black cop driving it. We were both flying on I-96 for a few mins together and then he took a ramp off to another freeway.

Today ah, we be like hung from the highest tree in the land

I don't think its a question of anyone potentially getting hurt (although there was the real possibility).

I think the video documents yet another case of preferential treatment and cops openly breaking, in such a spectacular manner, the laws they're supposed to be enforcing. The cops were also caught trying to intentionally cover up the act (big surprise there).

Nice to hear that some cops are actually human, make human mistakes and have human consequences.
Agree with them or not, those cats are pretty cool.

I would have laughed if those stupid kids that gave chase slammed into the back of the GTi with much bigger brakes.?..then got a huge ticket. LOL.

Although stupid and irresponsible,of,public safety servants,,they should have done this at 4:00 am when there is no other traffic....duh.

I expect we all should live by the same laws and the police should live by the same rules as the citizens are required to. Preferential treatment of the rich and cover up by the police shouldn't be tolerated in any mannor.

a friends boss used to golf with some of the higher ups. was not uncommon for them to us unmarked cruisers to expedite there trip to the course....

not so much, since I bet if the average person was caught speeding at the aforementioned 4:00 am they would have gotten a ticket from one of these cops.

...and if I was pulled over getting a ticket while this drove by, you can bet I'd raise quite a stink about it too. And I can only imagine how 'potty-mouthed' I'd get lol.

Ventrella "denied criminal wrongdoing"??? How do you figure that, Joe? Just shows how some cops figure the laws they enforce don't apply to them.

assholes should have been fired long ago.. the cops jobs are to enforce the law. sorry but they need to obey them also.. in fact since they are employed to enforce them i think they should be held to even a higher standard..

In the old days - old 1980's lol - it was not unheard cops cutting you a break - even letting you off.

State cops were the coolest cops in town. They did nailed us a few times for speeding and god forbid being caught with open beer in the car. We seen that once, 4 jock boys outside the car and a bunch of beer bottles on the roof as the cops were searching the car. The guys look to be crying as we slowly drove past them.

If you were driving safe in THEIR minds, it went a longways. Safety always came first. No alcohol on your breath was a big plus, back then .01 was just impaired and .015 was drunk.

Cops had more freedom before video cameras record everything. They didn't always had to follow the law to a T, they could use their common sense.

Maybe some cops today still use their common sense. You never know how those cops might have handle you if you were just screwing around in an old muscle car and were driving safe in THEIR minds.

For all we know, those might have been some of the cooler cops still around ...just saying

My district office was in Clifton and I drove the Garden State parkway a few times. The biggest collection of A-holes in the world used it. I've been passed on the shoulder, between cars, any way you can imagine. I drive the right lane and usually with the traffic or above their speed. It's the worst road in NJ and these guys pick it to do this. Freakin stupid. ..Rant over

Seems like the exotic cars in the know we're not too happy about the goof ball kids getting in on their action, ie cutting them off numerous times.

Looked like they were trying to send the kids a message to back off but they definitely seemed too retarded to take the hint.

I agree, the cops were retarded as hell for doing this and should be fired.,no doubt.

I used to live in Clifton, and work in Hillside. I drove the GSP twice a day everyday for about 5 years before changing jobs. The I graduated to driving S-3 From Clifton to Secaucus, every day. Not much better, and S-3 has more traffic because of the direct route to the Lincoln Tunnel.
But I agree with you, plenty of yambags on that road. Reminds of of the LIE, too. You know... Where Rumblefish drives.... :poke:

More than likely it was a case of "You scratch my back and I'll scratch yours!" Cops don't get paid enough as is so a little extra here and there does help.
