Nova SS 396 sells for 250,000

Back in 71 or 72 when I was 13, this older friend got a 69 or 70, I didn't know my Nova's back then. anyhow Nova. I think he had bought it new, 396/375, 4 speed, don't remember the rearend ratio. It was red with a black interior. He gave me a ride- I would be proud to have that car in my garage today! It was beautiful! Then he got married:( and the car went bye bye I think.

A guy in my High School had a 72 Nova Rallye with the factory zipper sun roof and a 350, a mild day two car. Cool car but the wheel hop was terrible, he added some Lakewood traction bars and that helped.
250K is insane but how many 396 Novas out there have 11k on the odometer.

74 gto got a 400 and could have a 4 speed.

Roughly the same weight. Way better heads, 50+cubes, and a solid cam in the 96. Stock to stock, the 96 SHOULD take a 340 Duster, easily.

Therein lies the rub.

Should.

Put an equally equipped 383 in the Duster and see what happens.

That reminds me of another advantage Duster has-

Wheel wells.

You can get pert near any tire you want under a Duster, Demon, Dart Sport, or 67-69 Barracuda.
...without modification.

Not so on a nova or clone.

OK< then how about a 383 A body Barracuda.

Hmmm, those were available before a big block nova was.

Ptttttttttttttttttttttttttttt
lol. Still no match for the 375/396 in a 68 Nova. Now a 69 M code car is a fish of a different color.

I remember Dad had a 75 hatchback. We hauled a LOT of wood in that thing while we built our house. Local cops finally asked Dad(jail-guard at the time) to please put it out of its misery lol. It crabwalked like it was meant to lol. Buddy n I smoked the tires off it then drove to wreckers.
I remember those when they were new. I always hated them. I lot of them would crab walk down the road.

Now wait just a cottonpicker here.....

If a 340 Duster is "almost" a match....

...and "more displacement" is "always" better...

I used to have no problems dispatching 396s in my 383 Bee.

...and I routinely beat 350's with a poly 318.

Only the FACTORY never made a 383 anywhere near a 375 horse 96. (Best rating ever was the mythical 343 horse, in 62)
So the equally equipped 383 would have to be one that somebody put together.
A 383 car could definitely smoke a 325 horse 96, a whole lot weaker animal.

... and would get TRAINLENGTHED, by a 375 hp 396.
Out of the box, a 383 a-body Cuda was a fifteen second car. A 375 horse was a low 14, high 13 with a good driver, and a 12 second ride on slicks with some gear.

I owned a 383 GTS 4 speed car with headers and 3.91.

My Buddy had 2 L78 Novas 4 speed cars. Stock with headers added and tires. He would go past me like I was standing still.

I added compression, a cam, and ported heads. He still clubbed me like a baby seal.

His car with just the headers and tire ran 12.2s at 114 mph.

Thanks for the confirmation.
"clubbed me like a baby seal" . LOVE that, LOL.

The first ride in Ron’s black Nova was the first time I got a bit scared in a street car before we got to 60 mph.

And for additional perspective, with my GTS, I never lost a street race to any Chevelle, Camaro or Nova with a 325hp 396/402.

The L78 was a different animal.

About a hundred horsepower different animal.
Eventually got 12.60s out of a warmed over 325 horse 4sp version, in a 55 B/A hdtp. Big port cars still spanked me.
