Is there any way to determine the assembly plant from a fender tag? Without going into detail, I've run across a car with no dash but an intact fender tag - the tag numbers match the numbers on the radiator support, cowl & trunk lip. I know everything but the 7th character of the VIN. If I can determine where this was built, I can check with a LEO source who can give me the ownership/registration history - or see if the dash is being used in another car. Any ideas?

Not that easy.

But what is the car make and model?

ALL 1970 chargers were built in St Louis.
All TA AAR built in Hamtramck,
All A12 built in Lynch Road

1968 Dadge Dart 2-dr HT. Was a 'Sold when ordered' car. I'm not familiar enough with which plants turned out which cars so I can't even narrow it down.

IIRC the body numbers on the core support and trunk support (before they went to Vin related numbers) had the plant like 72 ####### was year, plant, SO number, 67, Hamtramic, SO number

where are getting the rest of the vin from?

68 has SO# on core and trunk so it should read 8 # #####

I'm sorry, maybe I'm reading the SO# as the last numbers of the VIN. Those six numbers start with a '2' - so if I'm understanding this correctly, the car was built at the Hamtramck plant? And I don't have the last six numbers of the VIN?

I was a little vague in my last reply. Yes, the core support is 8 2 xxxxx.

Do you have a photo of the trunk or core support #

I was looking at the 68 FSM and they started using letters for the plants

found some additional info

EXAMPLE body number

B8L123456

first letter is assembly plant: B = Hamtramic
second digit is model year: 8 = 1968
third digit is car line: L = Dart
fourth through ninth: 123456 = SO number

this is from a Plymouth FSM so it is missing the Dodge car lines

the 68 fender tag should look like this and the circled area are the SO number not the 6 digit vin

The trunk should follow like this, red circle is SO number (images are not from the same car)

this reads B8X077834 (hamtramic, 1968, Charger, SO#)

Hamtramic, 1968, Barracuda, SO#

Thanks for this. Yes, I'll get a pic of the core support later tonight.

I was confusing 67 and 68 body numbers and Myself!

post 8 is accurate for 68, I deleted the earlier post that was not accurate

No problem; you're far better at this than I am for sure. Called the guy about getting a snap of the core support. Won't happen tonight - he's a nurse and is pulling a double shift to make more $$$$. It will be tomorrow evening. Hang in there.

Just to close the loop, I never went back to check on the core support number. I got distracted and bought a different car. I'll post a build thread when I get my act together...
