yes that is what I meant - just the pan capacity, with another qrt for filter. thanks all for info. I want specs a dipstick in a 669 oil pan on a 383 to compare mine to..maybe will try c-body forum

The dipstick may be different for that pan, as well as the tube or a combination of all 3.

This is exactly what I was going to suggest. Except I would use 5 qts , new filter, run the car , then let it set over night. Then mark full on the dipstick.
Im not a big fan of checking oil after sitting overnight. Customers dont like to wait that long. And i did have to drain 1/2 qt to satisfy an anal retentive customer after he checked his oil after sitting overnight. Its dumb. Dont do that.

As long as it doesn't drain out of the filter and makes the dipstick look over filled you're good. Big blocks shouldn't be an issue.

In just working off experience and about 5000 oil changes.
Its a heavy equipment thing, part of pre-trip in highway tractors and such.

You've done a few thousand more than me.

Its likely double that, i was being conservative.

IMO, You already know what's in there. Why not just recalibrate the full mark.
The MP book makes it a point to calibrate the dipstick after a change in parts.

first oil change?
...was this a fresh rebuild with everything dry?First coating of every surface would consume some oil.

no, but first change I've done on it. Normally I'd just drain, remove/replace filter, refill to full mark on dipstick, and top off after running a couple minutes. But my curiosity (it killed the cat..) made me measure what drained out and I was surprised it was about 3 1/2 quarts.. but then that big filter accounted for another quart and we were fairly close to 5 quarts. Also I recall it was about 1/8" low on the stick before changing...so that much must represent about half a quart, if that makes any sense. Sorry to beat this to death; I can get caught up in the details but thanks for bearing with me. Now, my neighbor says he hasn't changed the oil in his '72 Charger in the past 8 years since he puts so few miles on it each summer..hmm

That’s no 72 charger....is this a test?
Guy did his own oil changes, wrote mileage on the filter. 54,000 since filter was last replaced.
Buddy never changed oil in his ford, finally kicked a rod bearing.
A couple weeks ago had a truck in shop and oil filter rusted through...
Could go on. Some so bad it plugged oil pump pickup.

And a 1/2 quart under or over full doesn't cause that kind of damage. Lol It's just a oil change. 5 quarts with a filter. Don't over engineer it.
