Oil Filter Won’t Budge

Very often, somebody thinks it's a test of their manhood to crank the filter on as tight as possible, and crushes the gasket/o-ring until it's metal-to-metal. I use the seatbelt strap style for those, it will crush the filter, but usually works. I've even ripped the shell off a couple, & had to chisel the filter base loose, be careful if it comes to that.

I've been carrying a scar on my right hand for 50 years now from changing an oil filter. Removing a factory oil filter on a Ford that was tight as a virgin and it let go all of the sudden. Return line hose clamp on the power steering pump laid me open like a fish.
 
These work for me, but not a lot of room.

I have a 90 degree adapter with a filter still on it that I could never get off....I figured I'd perform surgery on the bench and just never got to it cause I had extra 90 degree adapters laying around...man I bet its been 30 years...you could do what most guys would do start cussing and swearing and beating the hell out of it with a hammer...:)

I worry that if I try the screwdriver trick it will just tear through the metal of the can.

Wondering if there is any specific tip or trick here that I am overlooking?

Turn it towards the engine maybe lol jk
Probably been said , but ..Take the adaptor off entirely and remove it in a vice if need be.
 
There is the old punch a screwdriver through the filter and try and spin it, or just tear it to pieces!

I'll add this, but it's totally your decision. I don't like remote filter kits. I've never seen one that didn't leak eventually and that's up to and including factory remote mounted filters. The oil always seems to find a path around hose ends and threaded connections. I've used every sealer I can think of through the years and always, sooner or later, some dampness shows up.

Drain backs & therefore dry starts can be a problem if not mounted & plumbed correctly.
 
As others have sorta said, I'd use a hammer and not too sharp chisel and try to get it to turn by the base ring .

I have had this issue once before (maybe the rubber on the filter was not oiled before install). I used a long screwdriver and placed it on the folding rim of the filter and taped it counter clock ways with a hammer to get it to move a little. Then I could get a wrench on it to remove it. Note: While installing the new gasket, make sure you don't over tighten the center bolt. You can close up the holes in it or even break it off. If the angle is correct with the adapter, I would make the adapter and block with a chisel or something similar, for the proper location on install.
