Oil pump issue

Last week I went and changed my oil pan gasket. I cleaned out the pan and installed gasket and everything was great. went for a quick ride bout a mile away motor started making a loud noise. Pump locked up do to some pieces of hard what seem to be plastic black color. I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THIS COULD BE! The motor is a 360 mnfg in 1978 bone stock. and any info onb what i need to do to replace the pump drive shaft would be awesome I know you guys are great and smarter than, I.
 
Dunno about the plastic,, but I broke the shaft (hardened one now).
Noise? I took out a rod bearing.
 
is it easy to replace shaft?

Pull the distributor, unbolt the rocker arm shafts, and remove the timing chain. Turn the cam backwards and the drive pops right out. Your black chunks are more than likely what is left of the valve stem seals. Plan on replacing them, the oil pump, the oil pump pickup, and while you are in there check all the bearings. If there is a bunch of slop in the timing chain, replace it as well.
 
That plastic could be valve seal material. It's normaly flexible but after untold miles they get hard as a rock and crack off, only to end up in the oil pan.

What noise did it make? oil starvation? knocking? That is the main problem. As for as the shaft- just reach in and twist it out cc
 
remove distributor...use large flat blade screw to turn shaft counter clockwise...
 
I've been able to pull the drive out through the distributor hole. Find a damn good magnet and you're good to go. It can be done.... even with the little patience that I have.
 
I've also seen the stock plastic top timing gear disintegrate and put chunks into the oil pan. Their usually an off white color but you never know. Grab the harmonic balancer with both hands and rock it back and forth and feel the timing chain play. If it has a bunch it's time to replace it too.
 

I've used mechanics wire and coat hangers to fish them out too. If you hear noises, damage has been done. You need to see if it was limited to just the bearings or if the crank got messed up too.
 
Could the pieces be the plastic collar that some oil pumps have between the drive and the oil pump? I've taken out drives with a string wraped around the gear.

Same here, got me a telescopic pick-up tool with a healthy sized magnet at the end from Harbor Freight, worked like a champ.
