My Gramps was born in 1900, Dad in '24. They were in "Beautiful Downtown Burbank" as Carson would say. In 32 they came up here to the N end of Idaho---in a '28 Buick, a hell of a car back then, so Dad was 8 or so, and Gramps was 32. Dad had this saw as long as I could remember, and I've used it. It is a small saw, and "I guess" I always thought Dad had had it when he was a "kid." Today I used it and here, in small stamped letters about 1/4" tall are "FM" my gramp's initials. So it was GRAMP'S saw, not Dads. Engraved "Los Angeles 1929 CAL" and then stamped "FM"

Gramps was a carpenter since he was maybe 12, working with his Dad. When he came up to N Idaho he worked for the USFS, during WWII for a short time worked for the Naval base Farragut, and then back to the USFS. If any of you know "Priest Lake", Idaho, there's a Cabin/ museum up in Luby Bay, which he was the super of, constructed under him by the "CCC" boys (Civil Conservation Core). That cabin was the USFS ranger station at Priest for many years

I have a couple old ones like that myself, that were handed down through the generations.
Some old planes too. Love old tools...

My Dad was in the CCC in Idaho after the war. He was born in 21. Possible they met. Thanks for the cool story!

For those that dont know ... they tested submarines up there and may still ...
For clarification, the cabin is in Priest Lake, Farragut was near Bayview, on Lake Pend Oreille, , and my neighbor works for the civilian contractor at the sub research

i have a picture that i would love to know the story behind (and by "i have" i mean it is in an album at my parents house)

it is a black and white picture of a man who is clearly my grandad, installing a window in what looks like a camp barrack, under the watchful eye of what is clearly a german officer (cant remember if he's SS or not)

Just got the story from my dad
The gentleman in the picture was "uncle wim"
He was one of my grandmother's brothers who towards the end of the second world War got forced into the "arbeitseinschaft"

Since all able bodied men in Germany were enlisted, they would force men from occupied territories into labour

Several of my Dad's uncles were drafted
Some of them went into hiding, some of them went

Uncle Wim went, and apparently worked as a carpenter in one of the camps (I presume it was in Germany)

He did return safely after the war was over

I'll try to get my hands on the actual picture

Thanks for the great story! It took me a while, but I finally found the "FM". I wonder if there are still places around that can sharpen and reset the teeth on old saws like that? I have my Dads old hand saw that I would like to restore and display.

I would search locally. Around here there are several independent, "one man" outfits that sharpen knives and saw blades, etc

I have my grandpa's Toledo die set still in it's original wooden box. I'll be 63 in a few weeks so I figure they are over a 100 years old. I also have my dad's ridgit die set that you have to put each piece of the die in the fixture have both handles too.
