Opinions on a rear gear ratio for a Slant 6.

Currently my 8 3/4 has 3.55gears with the 2.66 1st gear a833. I used to have the a833od with the 3.09 1st gear and the car launched good but 2nd gear was lazy.

Now my launch is lazy but 2nd gear is good. I'm considering the 4.10 ring gear swap to get me back to a snap your neck launch.

But before I do that, has anybody used a 4.10 with a slant?

Current max RPMs from the egnine are 4000.
Or I can try a tire swp first. My rear tire is a 205/60 R15.
 
If you are going to drive on the interstates, your'e going to be buzzing that engine pretty high. The only thing the 4.10 will give you is a good launch. Everything else will suck. It sounds like you might have a almost stock engine (4,000 rpm max), so even at 55 mph you will be over your power peak.
 
Well, you figured out that
1) a Second gear of 3.55 x 1.92=6.92 is a good second, and
2) that 1.67 x 3.55=5.93 is a terrible Second, and
3) that 2.66 x 3.55=9.44 is a lazy First, but,
4) 3.09 x 3.55= 10.97 is a Good First gear.
So what you want is the 10.97 First with the 6.92 second .... Right?
Well, that combo actually exists and it's called a Commando. The gears are
3.09-1.92-1.40-1.00, with splits of; .62-.73-.71 Very Nice; I love mine.

The key here is that you like the 6.92 Second gear.
If you were to use the A833od, you'd need a rear gear of 6.92/1.67= 4.14 which rounds to 4.10
But Low gear with the od box, becomes 3.09 x 4.10= 12.77,
and so with a 4000rpm redline, and 24.7" tires, that shift comes at just 23mph, and then, at the shift, you're stuck at 23mph= 2170 in Second. Therefore, you may need to rev First a lil higher, just to get into Second at a lil higher rpm, so the doggone thing doesn't fall on it's face.
Lets say you revved first to 4800@27.6mph, then in Second, that would be 2600rpm. That would be a lil better.
Now
Lets say you installed that Commando Box AND then went back to the 3.55s.
Now you only need to rev First to 4200@28.1mph, and the 1>2 shift gets you 2600 That's pretty good right?
With this Box, 4000 in 4th gets you 82.7mph with 3.55s and 65=3140.
Whereas the od-box gets you 65= 2230, also with 3.55s
IMHO, I would not use the A833overdrive for this application. Second gear is just too far away.
I think the slanty would be happy with the Commando/3.55s. But,
Ideally, she really needs a 5 speed.
Or an automatic with a 2600/2800stall.

BTW; This is for a streeter.
 
4:10 LS and a 833 is what is going to be run in my /6 65 Barracuda. However my /6 is "tricked out" and I don't plan on going hard much more than a 1/4 mile.

3.91 or maybe a 3.73..
4.10 Would be great till you wanna drive faster than about 50-55 mph..then youll see the tachometer in the 4,ooo rpm range
 
Echoing others, 4.10 would be ideal considering the power to weight. It brings the overall ratio very close to what the 3.09 was with a 3.55 and puts OD at 3000 at 73-74 mph (easier to maintain speed with hills). It also makes it easier to keep your foot off the clutch in a traffic crawl (2000 is 13-14 mph).
 

The OD is gone. I have the regular close ratio now.
Ya' can't have Your cake & eat it too,......Your gonna have to decide what's more important, highway or takeoff......it's that simple. With a redline of 4K, it won't be safe to do much on a real highway,...and may start running hot....
I ran 4.10's with 235/60HR14's out back, stock juicewheel in the 904,..with the 2bbl & cam etc. it slowed up pulling at 5,300,....no way I would run an engine 1,300rpm shy of that with even smaller tires.
*EDIT* Tires are probably close to the same diameter being 15's.....

I run a 4.10 with a T5. It's a blast on country roads and at intersections but works pretty hard on freeways over 80.
 
My 1973 Duster runs pretty good up around 80 on the highways with the 2.76 gears. I can simulate having 4.10s by keeping the 904 in second gear (1.45 * 2.76 = 4.002), but that gets old quick, and higher speeds are a gear shift away. Once I find an 8-1/4" axle, I'd change to 2.94s just to do it, and maybe even 3.21s, but 3.21s would start to hurt my high speed driving.

With 205-70-14 tires and 2.76's, 3000 rpms gets me 83 mph on the speedometer. I haven't calibrated it yet but it seems to be pretty close to correct.

Apologies for not having dug out that buried rear btw,...haven't been able to fit fixing the winch on My wrecker in yet, hopefully by the end of the month I can get into it & see what all it's going to need.

If you want to fiddle with gears and tires to see where they put you, here's a handy calculator. I use it all the time to figure out what RPM I want at what speed, then adjust tire size and gears to match.

If you want snappy in traffic launches and hiway cruising with good ratio spacing, drop some coin and get fabbing to put a T5 or other 5 speed of your choosing between your Slant 6 and the ratio of you choosing, depending on tire diameter, vehicle weight, camshaft specifications, usable RPM range and intended Vehicle use.

Here is a slant in a 3000# Dart with T-5, and 3.91... It does okay.

If we can get the engine down to 300# that Would be a feat.

Anyone up for an AL 170 with an AL head, AL bellhousing, AL Flywheel, and AL Rods?
