Today I was out at a store, I should but won't mention who. They had a bunch of junk stored/ displayed in the handicapp parking zone. Had one space and the adjoining buffer zone (for wheelchair hoists) taken up, and at the other end of the row, had a piece of equipment in the buffer zone, so basically, they had taken up two spots.

So I call the local PD, who never seems to be home, and they spit you into dispatch.

I tell the operator that, "there's no hurry, when you get time, would you have someone remind these folks that etc......"

"Did you talk to the manager?"

"NO." (I didn't tell her that if I had, the PD would probably already BE there!!)

"This is not a police matter."

"Not a police matter? This is state law. These parking places are mandated by law"

"This is not a police matter. Would you like to have an officer call?"

"Absolutely not."

So THEN I go over to the local plumbing supply where I know a few of the guys, had a coke, said hi, bla bla bla, and headed for home.

WHEN I TURNED THE CORNER!!!!! The PD was at the other buisiness!!!!

If people were calling the police department over every minor parking citation it would be chaos. If you have a problem with it just talk to the store employees... most people would be happy to move if you're polite about it. Calling the police department seems immature... I mean no offense to you just advice :)

pretty obvious you don't need to use the handicap spots....no offense to you of course...

Don't get me wrong, I certainly would go in and say something, I HATE it when people park in a handicap spot that shouldn't. But mistakes happen, tell them and if they don't care, if you want, then call!

and if you can not make the hike from the nearest open parking spot? just go home and come back later? by any chance have you ever heard of the ADA?

I agree with you 273 the handicap spaces are used by the owners of the local DD as their personal parking spots and local PD turns a blind eye to it. In the downtown area people use them an if you say anything they are just going to be a minute so it doesn't matter. I don't think local PD has ever written a ticket for it that I know of.

A few years ago, and I mean a very few, I would have been happy to get into a screamin' match with some employee. I'm no longer willing to do that, then return to the store and have to deal with him or her on a continuing basis

This is no "minor parking" issue. This is two HC spots out of 4 or 5. There are people a lot worse off than me. I've had several friends in wheelchairs over the years, and it ain't pretty

One friend of mine was miles from home, had legally parked his van in a HC spot. Some moron parked in the "buffer zone" next to his van, the spot that is reserved for HIM to unleash his chair hoist, and the ONLY way he has to get into the van.

So he had to wait, as it turned out HOURS for the idiot car owner to happen back and move his car. Years ago, when he was in better shape (he's gone now) he actually drove a 2 dr 'vert for many years, and had enough upper body strength to wrestle a manual chair into the seat behind him!!!!

Ya know when you start to get a little more feeble, you start questioning whether you should confront someone.

Think about it.

Parking in a handicapped parking space IS NOT AN ACCIDENT - IT'S AN ON PURPOSE.

An accident is when you press the wrong button dialing your cell phone or texting while driving....

If the police aren't supposed to enforce the posted handicapped parking fine, who gets it? Maybe I should patrol the handicapped parking so I keep the fine then if the police aren't supposed to.....

I saw something like this the other day but it was a cop in the handicap spot. A true handicap person came to the store when the owner asked the cop to move he told the owner he would not he was a cop and did not have to.

I would have taken a picture of that and sent it to the local news outlets.

Just so happens my uncle is the chief of police in the jurisdiction where this happened.

I went to the Post office a couple months ago and there parked in the handicapped spot out front was an immigrant, she came in to get her mail. We dont have delivery here, ya gotta pick it up at the PO. So I told her that parking in a handicapped spot is how you get your vehicle "keyed". I told her it was rude/ignorant, she didnt even acknowledge me. There was another person in getting there mail and he agreed and acknowledged me. I may have happened to spit inadvertently on drivers door handle...

It is not a mistake, it is rude, ignorant and they should have their valve stem cores removed!

This wouldn't have been at a donut store would it? Cause if it was then the cop had the right of way. Everyone knows that.

So most people who do it, do it just to run in somewhere real fast right? Go ahead, call the cops, IF and a big IF they do come to enforce it, chances are that *** hole has left by then... Now the officer has just wasted their time and the *** hole hasnt learned anything... Of course in some cases it might not be appropriate, but what if you would've just said something? Maybe they would move if you explained to them WITH OUT getting in a yelling match, and maybe they'll quite doing it...

Most people who park in handicapped spots KNOW they are doing it, but don't give a ****.

They will have the same don't give a **** attitude if you try to call him out on it, nicely or not.

But if you call the cops and get them a $250 or higher ticket, Then they will give a ****. You should hear them whine/beg/plead for the cop not to write them a ticket.... Even they knew that they were wrong to park there in the first place.

Steve, you have such a way with words...

Handicapped parking by not handicapped people.

Of course it's not fair. I'm agreeing with y'all. I'm just saying that sometimes there might be a better alternative than instantaneously calling the police and blowing **** out of proportion... Sheesh

Guess what it is the Police job to take care of problems like this. Federal law dictates this. Look up the American Disabilities Act (ADA)

Slightly different deal, but same aggrivation and maybe same solution. About twice a week, some random jackass is parked in what is clearly marked as a loading zone. The local tow outfit will have nothing to do with towing anybody away, and local parking enforcement would only get around to it in a week or two. The other truck who arrives there about two minutes ahead of me will park in the street six inches from their driver door, I pull up about one inch off their rear bumper, and the truck that comes in just after me will pull around and park six inches off their front bumper. Then we take an extra ten minutes loading, and an extra ten BS-ing, laughing like 'ell whilst whatching the random jackass stand there holding a hot pizza or something of that nature from the shop around the corner. Generally speaking, we don't see a lot of repeat offenders. So, if it was me who needed the handicap spot, and it was clear to me that the vehicle, display, or debris that was in it did not, I'd just park right in the effin middle of everything, and block traffic. Then when and if the law does show up, just tell them that I tried to park in the designated area, but....... :finga:

Already mentioned the ADA but it was ignored.....wonder how bad this guy is going to be bitching about this sort of stuff when the day gets here that he is looking for a handicap spot....
