Anyone know a good source for paint that will stick on stainless? I'm looking to restore some hub caps and the paint is worn off. Does it need a self etching primer to start with or is there a one-coat-does-it-all version? I need black, red, and blue for a '65 Valiant "V" cap. Has anyone done it themself and can relate their experience? I don't suppose anyone makes a masking set for those do they? It's going to be fun painting all those little rectangles!
Thanks, Mark

I used some regualr old black rostoleum spray can on a set of my old dart hub caps and they lasted along time only some minor chips from the rocks driving around evreyday, I washed them with soap and water and air dryed them shook the can and layed out some paint

Dupli-Color makes a great self etcher......I'd use that for the first coat, then apply your black....If the primer dries overnight, rub it lightly with a little 0000 steel wool before the color coat......Just be sure to blow off any little steel hairs before you shoot the black.

The factory painted them 40 plus years ago so there can't be a lot of science involved. They aren't 316 surgical stainless anyway. If the surface is scuffed to provide a tooth the paint should stick. Avery light coat ( just enough to cover ) is probably best. Sometimes a liquid mask works better than tape too.
i have covered a entire part with sheet material then cut out the detail with hobby knives.

OK....scuff with a red scotch brite, prime with any DTM primer and rattle-can away.

BEST...clean with a gentle sandblast and powdercoat.

I did mine a few years back and know exactly what your talking about with the triangles. I used a dremel with a pointy grind stone to scuff the painted area. PastorTom is correct on the Dupli-Color, that's what I used. Here's a picture. I bought flat black and used their primer.
